Left Dothan, AL, early Friday morning because I heard I had electricity. Came back to an intact house, yay!
My tree was all over the yard, now looks like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, but it's standing, yay!
I just got the Internet and cable on ten minutes ago, yay! I can rejoin the human network!!
I feel fortunate, and asked about by my friends, loved by my adult kids while I was in AL, and my DU family's support was a big help while I was coping. THANK YOU!
I just helped my next door neighbor to get her electricity back on yesterday, got her into my house for AC, a hot shower and some dinner. Today I got her groceries, so she's better today, and her very nice institutional caretakers are relieved (they didn't know that her power was out when they dropped her off) and that they have one less emergency to handle.
So I'm feeling grateful and fortunate that I could help more than just myself. Over a million more down here in Florida are still suffering, unable to access communications, and as many are trying to help them, thank you Big Government and Biden. Disaster reminds us that help for humanity is more important than politics.

(145,427 posts)We were watching the Weather Channel and monitoring a local weather blog (Space City Houston). My local Homes Owner Association had a map and the water never reached my subdivision. My son live about 3/4 mile from an intersection on 1-10 where there was eight feet of standing water at the underpass, but the water never got onto the access roads. We knew that both homes were fine but were were still nervous.

(5,125 posts)I live in MN and during a tornado warning in my building, I sent my kid downstairs and we lived on 3rd floor so I ran up to grab my emergency cash and documents. Thinking for one stupid moment how messy my place was and someone yelling at me to "Hurry up" and the tornado sirens blaring in the window, I snapped out of it.
But ever since then in a real crises, I get quite clear on what must be done and what needs to go.

I'm with you about the profitable media coverage of the worst of us. Media here are reporting the good stuff being done, though. Besides war, I sometimes think disasters help us put differences aside and pull us together. Humanity gets to show its best when others legitimately need help.
I love your name; I miss my Chicago home.

(32,086 posts)I was dodging the Ian Pt. 2 bullet, here in South Carolina. We just caught the edge of it, here. I have some cleaning up to do, thanks to the wind, but it's small stuff.
If you need a fun distraction, go to the Cubs' YouTube page, and check out the "Wrigley Field Like You've Never Seen it Before" video. It's amazing!!!
Glad you didn't get too much more than a storm cleanup.
I will check that channel out. Though I've already had season tickets there for 30 years, way before the Ricketts turned it into baseball disneyworld. It IS quite the extravaganza up in Wrigleyville, isn't it?

My oldest (Michigan) son bought the house for his kid. Probably headed down in a while to help get stuff together. Waiting on insurance and what we can do.

Glad to hear he's safe, at least. It's hard right now to get housing in that area. Looks like Sarasota County to me. Have they done anything for him?
I'm glad he's got a concrete dwelling, at least. Those take a beating but they don't get demolished unless they're right near the water. The home insurance, I believe, is with the state's exchange, right? Because national carriers won't do business in FL -- too much risk.
He will qualify for both state and federal, probably. My experience with various people I've seen who have shingles is that they never withstand hurricane winds. There will be lots of roofers with different offers, so good luck.
At least the dry season is upon us now, and a lot of rebuilding can be done in the Fall when the weather's comfortable.
All the best to him, you and your family.

(36,126 posts)Actually, I've helped her out before; she's a mildly disabled, can't drive, etc., and so depends on subsidized in-home care. But now and then, if she's in a pinch, she'll text. This time, her caregivers were overwhelmed, and didn't even know her electrical was out, so me being me, I just tried to solve the problem.
Ah, very nice of you to say. But I'm no hero and not the hero type.

(14,923 posts)I've heard via FB from 2 newish FLA (Orlando area) acquaintances (who are long time good friends, though, w a long time friend of mine) yesterday after conserving their cellphones bc they were w/o power & water. They said they are supposed to get power back today - have check the lastest fb.
Plus finally a quite long time acquaintance (former NJ'r), ? maybe near Orlando who no one had heard from as far as I know till post Sat
We either all know each other from shared interests.
Good Luck to you, your neighborhood, and State!

Tomorrow now is when it's supposed to be fixed
At least they can go sleep over at a friend's house w power tonight. 👍 Luckily they have people contacting them for emotional support if nothing else (myself having been in very different but very distressing circumstances emotional support was a vital part of staying on the stronger side) them via phone & FB sending.
Btw they had a freezer that they list a heck of a lot of food
Are you luckier in that regard? Hope so!
Stay safe!
ancianita
(36,126 posts)No, I didn't lose frozen food. I cranked the fridge all the way up a day ahead of leaving to get it super cold so it would withstand a couple of days off, then came back to find that the power had stayed on the whole time! (I think we have old school underground wiring, because power has never gone off; though I had to think it would in a hurricane.)
Thanks for sharing your situation. Hoping for good outcomes for your friends tomorrow.

(6,715 posts)Amazing you never lost power. My house in Edgewater still doesn't have it...massive flooding and not a lot of wind damage. The pictures from the Ft Myers area are beyond heartbreaking. We have what is left of Ian sitting out in the ocean not far from me in Philly, after transitioning to a rainstorm and then transferring its energy to an off-coast low. So now we are experiencing it as a cold nor'easter. I have already registered over 4" of rain from it with more to come over the next couple days since the system is now cut off from any steering flow and is just sitting off the coast spinning wind and moisture back to the west. Most of the stronger winds are confined to the coast but we are definitely getting the rain here.
It is going to take who knows how long for those poor people down in Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and especially Ft. Myers Beach to recover - especially any who lived in those mobile home parks.
ancianita
(36,126 posts)And thank you for your news.
Mine (or my sons') is a double wide mobile home, too.
The unnecessary deaths in Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and especially Ft. Myers Beach, I attribute to Ron DeSantis' bad judgment and delayed decision to evacuate him, long after the National Hurricane Center showed where the cone would hit. Even I saw that by Sunday, and Biden had sent the aid the previous Thursday, so that DS could afford to do the evacs early.
His people are putting out stories about government employees looting houses, etc. It's all noise to deflect right wing media from focusing on DS's performance before Ian hit.
There's a lot of suffering in this state, with its leaders always absent (Rubio didn't even show up for the disaster aid vote, and Scott voted NO) or anti-voter in their votes. And these leaders are hoping people will be too worn down, and give up GOTV in Nov.
