(102,320 posts)once knew the area well. That was undoubtedly going to allow for very limited egress once winds picked up. I agreed with you then, malaise. Delaying evacuations in that area was irresponsible. And I agree with you now--DeSantis will do all he can to mask the true death tallies.

In a natural disaster, dead bodies are dead bodies. And what would be the benefit of lowering the hurricane death toll?
hlthe2b
(102,320 posts)failure to initiate evacuations in a timely manner with this hurricane... Lying to deflect and self-defend is the RW and Trumpist natural response--very identical response/tactics. Taking responsibility for nothing... And yet, you defend this?

(17,008 posts)Reefer trucks full of bodies etc it was all bullshit. Without cell phone service people cant contact loved ones and fear the worst. There is literally no reason to lie about it. Throw in the massive number of responders from multiple states and agencies that would have to be complicit and its clear it just doesnt happen.

(17,937 posts)14 to 18 foot storm surge. The real killer. Heavily populated, low lying areas. Late evac. A ton of folks unfamiliar with what hurricanes can really do. Picture a biblical flood coupled with an F2 tornado that lasts for hours. A recipe for disaster as a sheriff down there mentioned on the day of landfall and was raked over the coals for it.
Buckeyeblue
(5,499 posts)The Florida population has been growing but also think of the net new "retire to Florida" crowd that, as you stated, has zero experience with hurricanes, meaning they don't understand storm surge. People in that group don't have the judgement to know when to go. It's interesting.
