The Pill
Song by Loretta Lynn
You wined me and dined me when I was your girl
Promised if I'd be your wife, you'd show me the world
But all I've seen of this old world is a bed and a doctor bill
I'm tearing down your brooder house 'cause now I've got the pill
All these years, I've stayed at home while you had all your fun
And every year that's gone by, another baby's come
There's gonna be some changes made right here on Nursery Hill
You've set this chicken your last time 'cause now I've got the pill
This old maternity dress I've got is going in the garbage
The clothes I'm wearing from now on won't take up so much yardage
Miniskirts, hot pants, and a few little fancy frills
Yeah, I'm making up for all those years since I've got the pill
I'm tired of all your crowing how you and your hens play
While holding a couple in my arms, another is on the way
This chicken's done tore up her nest and I'm ready to make a deal
And you can't afford to turn it down 'cause you know I've got the pill
This incubator is over-used because you've kept it filled
But feeling good comes easy now since I've got the pill
It's getting dark, it's roosting time, tonight's too good to be real
Aw, but Daddy don't you worry none 'cause Mama's got the pill
Oh, Daddy don't you worry none 'cause Mama's got the pill

(6,716 posts)I was thinking about when she first became famous. She seemed to remember her roots.

(295 posts)My fellow Kentuckian. I met her on numerous occasions as she was dear friends with my Aunt Skeeter. She was as lovely as could be. So kind and personable

(81,389 posts)Never cared for country music. It just isnt my thing. But The Pill, in 1975 was another thing entirely! AMAZING song! Almost like a battle cry. Or a latter day declaration of independence for women. Really got my attention - and my respect!

(373 posts)I am really sad over the loss of Loretta Lynn. I don't support the witch burning. I don't support dancing on anyone's grave.
Loretta chose to speak out on the death of George Floyd, expressing pain over his death and suffering; racism wasn't her bag. Trump is sexist and racist, but he promised to bring back jobs for miners in a big show using actual miners as a backdrop. I believe that Loretta supported Trump's for his feigned interest in working people and, like millions, she was deceived. She was a trailblazing singer who championed women in her songs (having herself been married at 13 to a 21 year old man), who celebrated a women's access to the pill (now under threat), and who never forgot that she was a coal miner's daughter.
Biden has promised green jobs for displaced fossil fuel industry workers. Let's hold Biden's feet to the fire and deliver for coal miners and other displaced workers. Don't make people choose between following the empty promises of a racist demagogue and empty promises of democrats.
