Applegrove: if information is published before the election that Democrats are far ahead, and don't they vote early?, then it could suppress the Democratic vote. Exit polls, released during the campaign for president Kerry lost, were released mid day Election day giving him a big win, and kept Democrats from voting at the end of the day. He lost. A shy elephant theory was put forth (that republicans, with no prompting from Karl Rove or others in the GOP, were hesitant to answer exit polls that day) but I think it was GOP rat****ing.
