As US gas prices tick higher, the White House has reportedly asked the Energy Department to look into whether a ban on exports of gasoline would pull down costs at the pump for American drivers.
The move is a sign the idea of a ban is gaining support in the Biden administration, in the face of fervent opposition from the oil industry, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The measure would cover US exports of diesel and other refined petroleum products, as well as gas, the report said.
There have been heated discussions between White House officials and oil industry bosses over the need to lower gas prices, according to Bloomberg. Last week, President Joe Biden slammed energy giants and gas stations for raking in hefty profits and called on them to cut gas prices immediately.

(6,929 posts)And refuse to vote for not seeing the urgency of the moment.
We've got an election to win in order to save this democracy and we need BOTH chambers.
Restart putting pressure against all-things-oil AFTER the election is won in ONE month.
We've got good listeners in the White House so do not start "not voting because..."
Let's do it AFTER Roevember!

If anything, EV were more popular in early autos until the superiority of the IC engine with consumers overwhelmed them.

(24,329 posts)This idea sounds like something he'd propose to gain cred with his false concern for the common working guy and his anti-big business screed
But, Biden is proposing it. So, he's probably having a breakdown
I agree with this proposal and Biden's take on energy companies.
I don't know if what was said about gas stations is true. My understanding has been that they make pennies on the gas they sell. The real money is everything else they sell: candy, soda, etc
Justice matters.
(6,929 posts)We've got an election to win.
We need to win it in the House and 50+2 in the Senate to save democracy.
Let's "restart" the fight AFTER we win it, because if we lose it, forget democracy AND winning the climate-change battle.

(17,243 posts)Look they're cutting back oil supplies OVERSEAS to raise prices, so we're forced to raise our prices, we have
no choice, supply & demand demands it. Plus they'll hint at it's all Biden's fault.
Get the House & Senate to vote on no gas/oil exports until the Russia/Ukraine war is over. And do it A.S.A.P.
Show the voters this White House/Democrats can lead, plus we can use all the R "nay" votes against on the
campaign trail.

(13,920 posts)There are better options.
How about we put together a national plan with incentives and publicity to reduce the need for oil. If your job can be done from home.. Companies should be incentivized to have it be so. If your product can be sold close to home.. it should be. With incentives. If you could fit solar panels on your roof.. this should be a national priority. This is the patriotic response to multiple problems we have. Supply chain issues. Jobs. Inflation. Fuel concerns. Our allies overseas suffering from Russian oil withdrawls. If we cut our domestic use by 10%.. we could fill a huge chunk of their needs as they transition out of Russian dependence. And this would help with climate change and our emission. And covid reduction. And mental health needs. And reducing traffic. And it frees up real estate to be converted for housing, warehousing, and anything else that needs space.
Its not a money maker for the rich and influential. But damn if it doesn't look like a winner in virtually every other way. Every day it fails to be a thing i become more disappointed. A lot of it wouldn't even require legislation. It starts with proposals and making a public call for unity in doing it.
and if thats not enough, or the oil companies continue to gouge.. how about we require oil drilled here be sold here first. Then cap profits of oil pulled out of US territories sold in the USA at a lucrative but reasonable level.
