Earl Butz was Agriculture Secretary to both Nixon and Ford.
He was also a right prick. Which is not surprising many Republicans are. He made an explicit racist joke while campaigning for Gerald Ford's reelection.
The joke does not need repeating. Suffice it to say it revealed how twisted and cruel he was.
"[Gerald] Ford gave him a severe reprimand for highly offensive remarks. Mr. Butz resigned within days, saying that the use of a bad racial commentary in no way reflects my real attitude.
Now then, neither I or my dog "Tucker" are inclined to believe a word of Butz's apology. Still it indicates that perhaps Butz had some notion of propriety and shame.
When Orange Jesus came down the escalator and started his campaign by declaring "They're Not Sending Their Best...." Not one GOP candidate said anything to admonish him.
The GOP has morphed from slime to ooze.
Their party now runs on 100% hate, they have no integrity left.
The only people that are ashamed of the GOP aren't Republicans.
GOTV!

(1,850 posts)Really shocked me, twice as I passed it twice. It was on a major road, and it said
"Socialism or freedom? Vote Republican" seriously?!?! I think we need a sign
"Fascism or freedom? Vote Democratic!" I live in a red town in Western NC, meadows and cawthorns district, 60% Red. They really don't need a sign like that in this area, they've got the votes. But then again, the Senate race will be close, so they attack with slime and ooze.
They're generating fear to breed hate in this case, or trying to capitalize on the fear and hate of socialism, and pointing the finger at us. We're not socialists (who are not evil) we're Democrats, but they want their voters to think we are evil socialists. That pisses me off, seeing that sign.
Your op gave me the chance to vent about the slime and ooze. Thanks.

(1,789 posts)What I see with Trump is that he pushed them further down the road they were already on, with a nitro boost. It isn't some genius on his part, he is just so sociopathic and selfish, he just trampled over norms to get where he was going. Not just governing norms, also interpersonal ones. Any republicans who did have integrity have long since fallen or have been pushed off the wagon. I would say they are getting to ideological purity, except they have no ideology, just hate as you say.

(7,850 posts)the Republican Party has never not been racist, anti-semitic, misogynistic, xenophobic, ant-gay..back then the party of hate had an unwritten rule...never say the quiet part out loud..Earl Butz (laughing!!) did just that..big mistake!..and expediency became the name of the game..get rid of the guy and insist the racist sentiment was a one-off, an aberration...
and then came Trump..not only did he say the quiet part out-loud, he used a megaphone to do it..and surprise surprise, no Republican Party pushback, no contrition.. and just like that, racism/ethnic hate took up residence in the White House and Trump, a depraved, overtly racist/antisemitic/misogynistic/xenophobic/anti gay narcissistic sociopath, spread that hate, (along with his fellow Republicans) like it was manure which it most definitely was/is...
