So President Joey Brandon said that "Nobody fucks with a Biden." And the righties are up in arms about it. Or at least the fact that it wasn't tfg or one of their idiot heroes that cussed. Because, you know, Biden.
I think it endears him to most of us commoners because cmon, who hasn't dropped an f bomb or two in their lives? Righties, just shut the fuck up and let a real man deal with your foul ups.

Are you actually scolding and then "forgiving" a man for using a curse word in a manner that hurt no one, that insulted no one, that put no one down, that minimized no one?
It's a word.
And it's a word that was used in an appropriate manner.
claudette
(3,575 posts)but a word implies a sexual act - that shouldn't be used in public by a president of the United States or any other official. And, I wasn't "scolding" him - all I said was I wish he hadn't said it. I didn't call him any bad name or mean it to criticize him in any way.

(11,738 posts)You are certainly entitled to your opinion on the matter. There are certainly people who do not use curse words. I would wager, especially among men, and men with power, that curse words are used more often than you think.
The issue is that right wingers use ANYTHING and always in bad faith, to try to criticize Democrats. Dick Cheney told another colleague, on the Senate Floor, where there are rules about decorum, to, "Go fuck yourself". There was NO right wing outrage then about how inappropriate that was. If they really think that it is inappropriate, they would have had the same reaction to both men using the phrase/word.
claudette
(3,575 posts)right-wing magats do or say that is inappropriate or if they have outrage about their own bad behavior. But, I care about what our President says. I love him and hate to see him attacked - which magats will do to him for this.
Caliman73
(11,738 posts)You hate to see him attacked? They will attack him for whatever he does. Do you remember the outrage over President Obama's Tan Suit? They attacked over the color of his clothing, when one of their idols wore the exact color.
When we get "scared" or worried about what they will say about our candidate or politician, then we give them power over the framing of any situation. People curse, it is very common. It is not inappropriate or uncivil for a grown man to curse. There is nothing to apologize for, or be scared about. It is fake outrage.
Don't feed into or give power to the right wing's bad faith arguments by getting nervous about what they will say.
Simply say, "shut up you bunch of hypocrites" or as Dr. Jordan Peterson says, "Clean your own house before you start criticizing your neighbor's".
claudette
(3,575 posts)a Democratic Underground forum and do not feel that expressing my opinion on this feeds into right-wing bad faith arguments. Don't you think that by using such language, Dems themselves could give fodder for attacks?
I'm so sorry I expressed my opinion here. I'm done in this thread. I've learned my lesson.
Caliman73
(11,738 posts)I have my opinions challenged regularly. Unless someone is using bad faith arguments or hostile language I engage in the discussion or debate. I never feel sorry that I expressed my opinion because debate and discussion are learning experiences.
I do not think that using such language creates fodder for attack. As I said repeatedly, the right wing needs no fodder for attack. If they have nothing to attack with, they will lie and make something up with which to attack.
As I said before, President Biden used a curse word, a not uncommon one. You can certainly think that it was inappropriate. I don't.
I am sorry that the lesson you are taking away from this is that you should not share your opinion. I would say that a better take away is to have a good defensible position as to why you have that opinion.
claudette
(3,575 posts)I dont like to hear or read that word. If that makes me weird or not a true liberal in the eyes of some here, I have no other defense. I did not think expressing my wish that President Biden hadn't used that word in public would cause a problem for some. Doesn't mean I dont love him and I will vote for him again.
But, if thats the way it is here, I will remember this experience. Thanks
Caliman73
(11,738 posts)I hope that I am not one of those. I know that there are people on DU who see any criticism of President Biden, or other Democrats (except ones they don't like) as anathema, and they uses personally attacking language.
I try, and likely fail, not to do that. I actually like to have honest open discussions and debates.
I do not think you are weird. I also understand your concern. I simply do not share that concern, and I could not care less what the opposition thinks about the President's language, especially after they embraced a disgusting figure like Donald Trump as the leader of their party and continue to defend him.
I do not love President Biden either. I think he is a decent human being who is doing his best to help the American people. I think he has flaws in his policy and worldview (of which using the "F word" is not one), but he is infinitely better than anything the Republicans can ever put up as a candidate.
I would advise you to not emphasize this experience too much. Chalk it up to people getting too sensitive and defensive about "their President".

(82,383 posts)and the real issue is that does the criticism help the division of Democrats and help the right wing. Nobody says all criticism is terrible. We've been through this with Obama too. When there is a Democratic president, we need to support them so that the rest of the voters, the ones who are influenced by the general tone, don't get even more negativity for the Democratic President than the media already gives them.
treestar
(82,383 posts)and the media used to be gentlemanly as they called it. They just didn't report it. Or they were not close enough. As the internet came along, we get more and more information, and so it comes out whereas it did not before.

(231 posts)the origin of the word fuck, old german meaning to strike or penetrate. It became slang for sexual intercourse, but the original meaning is what people mean, (even if they don't know it), when they say "fuck you." It is entirely appropriate for our President Joe Biden to say that I also remember him saying it was a big fucking deal when we got the affordable care act.
treestar
(82,383 posts)always hated that the word meant both sexual intercourse and something negative, as though sex was negative or a "taking advantage." But that makes sense.
Biden hasn't said it in anger, either. Both those examples show that.

(4,616 posts)and many others that word is just another word. No harm caused, no laws broke. A word in a conversation not with me or anyone on this thread. Here's a few other examples of "but to me and many others....
"But to me and many others, filling a B/C prescription is inappropriate."
"But to me and many others, "their" marriage is inappropriate and shouldn't be allowed"
"But to me and may others abortion is inappropriate. And the list goes on an on and on.
Why is it so difficult for people to just live their own lives and stop worrying about what others are doing that might offend them? I have one rule, as long it's not breaking any laws or causing others actual harm, knock yourself out and do what you do. It's has no bearing on me or my life at all. Judge not lest ye be judged.

The amount of crap Joe has faced since his election win in 2020 has strengthened him. He is a fighter and if he has to use fighting words, so be it. Expose the Republicans who still support TDFG for the HYPOCRITES that they are. This will only endear more people to Joe.

(4,616 posts)YOU are participating in a discussion regarding Biden's use of the word Fuck, which by the way, wasn't for public consumption. He was having a private conversation not holding a press conference. And you have let it be known multiple times you think it's inappropriate and unsuitable. So there's no jumping to anything. It stands to reason if you are willing to have such an unrelenting reaction to this, you are highly likely to react the same to other things you think are not appropriate and unsuitable. And you are correct, I'm 100% certain you're not the only person in the world that thinks saying fuck is unsuitable. And no, it matters not who says it. I have a rule I go by. Because believe it or not there are most certainly lots of things in this world that offend, annoy, I don't agree with, I think are unsuitable or just flat out make me mad. I ask myself 3 questions. 1. Did this cause actual harm to me or anyone else? 2. Is it illegal, think murder, human trafficking, kidnapping etc.? and 3. Does this affect my life in any way? If the answer to all 3 is no, well then its not for me to worry about or even bother mentioning because not everyone thinks and lives just like me. So i'll ask again, are there also things that people can deem unsuitable and inappropriate? We all know the answer to that is a resounding yes. See Republican hate fests. So, three more questions. 1. Do those peoples feelings of unsuitable behavior deserve the same weight as your feelings about a president saying fuck? 2. Should we all act according to their feelings of unsuitable and inappropriate and put a stop to it? and lastly, 3. if the answer to 1 & 2 are no, does that not make us just like them?
