Actual patrolling by those who'd not thought of being in the police force, but could be drafted, trained at the federal level and disbursed to their own communities for service.
There has been talk about some form of service to be performed by all Americans. Sadly, left to volunteerism or career choices, too often white supremacists wind up in local police departments.
This would be a huge lift, but it ought to be discussed.

I have a nephew in the army. Our tax dollars are paying for his training and education. The budget to maintain our national security is huge. But we are being destroyed from within by very bad people. Horrible Americans. Far worse than Benedict Arnold.
We cannot afford to do nothing.

(146,317 posts)What we need is a better sort of police department that would attract people to that job. Right now, it attracts the wrong people, mainly.
We don't force people to do jobs here. When we have tried, it has generally worked out poorly.

(344 posts)The military draft was and is wrong, and so it would be for policing. I think we would only end up with better cops if we 1) paid more and paid well, 2) made some level of college education a requirement, and 3) implemented stringent screening for applicants, including psych evals and background checks somewhat similar to those conducted on people seeking intelligence clearance, not just a simple records search. But I dont see any of that happening.
