I brought my adopted rescue pup home from the SPCA shelter. She was a 6 year old coon hound. Traumatized and scared of everything, including being inside a house. She still won't let anyone but me and the grandkids pet her, but she's made so much progress. She wouldn't let me get close enough to put a leash on her two years ago. Now we walk around the neighborhood twice a day. She was terrified of the car and wouldn't get near it. Now she hops in when I say, "Park!" She's become such a great addition to my life. Tonight, I'm celebrating Tricksy.

(2,220 posts)I have a similar story about my 11-year old flat-coated retriever, Merlin, who I rescued from a rural shelter where he had spent eight of the first 12 months of his life after having been hit by a car, healed, and adopted and returned several times. He was terrified of everything. We had him on a low dose of Prozac for several years to tamp down the anxiety enough that we could work with him. Slowly, so slowly, he became a happy, confident dog. He still has some issues and fears (like those blue Amazon trucks), but he is about 98% normal, happy dog, something we never dreamed possible. He is the joy of our lives.
Rescue dogs are the best dogs.

(17,245 posts)and he was messing with his ears. First time he didn't want to go for a "car ride" after getting him in
I drove through Dairy Queen and got Rommel his own ice cream cone, repeated this about half
dozen times, after that he loved car rides.

(68,582 posts)Molly one of the poms had an older lady owner who died. She was treated well. But she went to a home that had kids -She had never been around kids. From what I heard the kids were allowed to torture her. At one point she made in the house and was beaten.
She had already been sent back twice when we took her. Her first day here, hubs tried to pick her up and was bitten. It took months of feeding her by hand to build trust and gentleness on our part to save this dog. Today she is one of the sweetest most loving dog I have ever seen. It took time and effort but we have been so lucky to share our lives with this wonderful dog. And she adores kids now. Truly a different dog.
