No wonder President Biden made those bombshell comments tonight.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11288029/Putin-wants-world-dies-says-expert-claims-health.html
'The decision in principle about the use or demonstration of tactical nuclear weapons has been made,' said Dr Solovey, who has been consulted by Western embassies in Moscow after making claims over Putin's medical condition.
'The question is how, when and where. I have no doubts we will end up on the edge of death, but I know we will be able to back off. We will be able to go through this.'
He claimed the current situation is more dangerous and closer to 'nuclear apocalypse' than during the Cuban missile crisis during the Cold War.
I know the DM is conservative but there was no Biden bashing in this article, and in light of the Biden statement tonight, it seemed worthwhile posting. It's also highly believable.
Fareed Zakaria told Don Lemon on CNN tonight that this would result in NATO entering the war and sweeping all Russians out of Ukraine within a few weeks via air power. He doesn't see the US responding in kind with nuclear weapons. Just conventional, overwhelming force.

(243 posts)I'm not terribly surprised. I'm glad that we have a non-escalation plan in place.
Ligyron
(7,639 posts)It wont.
If anything it will further anger them and probably get NATO involved even if it is a demonstration out in the woods somewhere.
If he actually hits a population center, then it truly will be an apocalypse
for Russia.
Hopefully, his generals will think better of this and nuke him instead.

Thing is, if he did get offfed, they'd say (and probably actually think) it was all one big CIA plot somehow.
Who knows, maybe it will be.

(12,618 posts)They have t know nukes will destroy, at the very least, their entire capability to wage war. And at the worst, the end of everything for everybody. I have to think they like their money & women more than being a tough dead guy

(101,378 posts)that makes crap up to sell papers and clicks. Solovey was chucked out of Russia 3 years ago, which is to his credit, but he does not have special insight into Putin or his current thinking.
Please, stop jumping every time some trash newspaper tries to makes you afraid. And don't pass it on to other people - you're only enriching the Mail's wanker owner.
PS: One thing you can be certain of is that President Biden was not influenced in the slightest by what Solovey claims. He runs a serious government, not a rumour mill.

National Enquirer + NY Post-style muckraking needing huge pillars of salt.

(36,137 posts)the OP's post of this RW rag shows that the Right still likely agrees with Biden. Even the Mail can read existential threats.
The effects on humans of using nuclear tactical weapons will definitely spill over borders, and likely get NATO involved.

(101,378 posts)It comes from a political scientist who hasn't lived there for 3 years, who spends his time inaccurately giving medical diagnoses of Putin (for which he's not qualified), and who has no chance of access to top secret Kremlin decisions. This is not about "existential threats", it's just fearmongering.
ancianita
(36,137 posts)If you take the spirit of President Biden's words, Biden is not exaggerating Putin's threat
"I don't think there's any such thing as the ability to easily [use] a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon." Quoted by CNN, NBC, and WaPO, if that will make people feel better.
While your argument re this politico's knowledge of Putin's health seems logical, Putin's health could also be interpreted to mean he'd order tactical nuclear weapons use because he's got nothing left to lose, healthy or sick.
Sometimes there's fearmongering in the name of smart fear. Even President Biden knows to take Putin seriously.

(7,276 posts)The Mail online relies on CLICKBAIT. It's not alone among newspapers in that, but it's a prime exponent.
How many times have we seen Mail photos linked on DU, despite some of us tiresomely pointing out it's a heinous rag?
People seem to think they're fab - that's because the Mail spends a lot of money on photo stock. The rest of its output is usually barely journalism.
There's a reason it's no longer accepted as a reliable source in Latest Breaking News, FFS!

Posters don't have to make this objective statement by President Biden take a backseat to how seriously right wing media are taking his words.

(5,437 posts)It would be nice if he said "Oops, bad move!" and withdraw all his troops, apologize to the rest of the world, and promise to make reparations.
But this is Putin, chances of that are zero. The seeds of his insanity were sown the day the war started.
So his next move is what, exactly?
Continue with a war he cannot win, until Russia runs out of weapons and soldiers to throw into battle?
Or make one desperate attempt to win, no matter what the cost? Nuclear attack on Kyiv?
I'm hoping there is a sudden and unexpected answer - an announcement that Putin is no longer in power, that moderates have taken over, and troops are called home. And Russia is prepared to negotiate with the rest of the world as to where things go next.

(32,797 posts)Will not change the course of the war for russia. Poopin knows this, so why would he do it? He knows this will bring the west directly into the war which he also knows would be his own personal Armageddon. India and China will back away even further.
Yes, hes nuts, but hes not stupid.

The other thing that is clear we would not be facing this if makeup boy was still in office. He would have handed Ukraine to russia. There would be no weapons and no help for Ukraine. Makeup boy wanted us out of NATO.
Joe is doing the right thing and his vast background gives me comfort.
With the air force of NATO and our air force russia would be shut down quickly. I bet the daily targets are already identified.
My opinion is that russia won't do it. Puketin comes from the russia intel community. He knows he can't win.
