It's not about climate change or the possibility that the Weather Channel website will have to add daily radioactivity levels, it's about the Supreme Court. It's a relatively short article and quick read but it says it all.
The most terrifying case of all is about to be heard by the US supreme court

(13,892 posts)Recent US history shows how spectacularly effective rightwing funders, representing wealthy Americans and corporations, have been in essentially buying control over our political system. These forces correctly perceive that if democracy is allowed to exist in an unfettered and neutral way, then corporate profits will be diminished and the powerful fossil fuel industry will be phased out over time. So they are organizing to prevent that from happening.

(10,216 posts)The US had managed to slow down capitalism inevitable destructive end in a dictatorship, theocracy or Plutocracy, thanks to strict controls put on capital by FDR. But the right wing tore all those down and has allowed capitalism to run amuck.
You wouldn't have all these idiots and crazies running around supporting the destruction of democracy if our economy was working. It's broken and fascism has gotten a foothold. It only does that when the majority feel the economy is rigged.

(6,854 posts)And we must add, democracy has nothing to do with lifetime unelected appointments or workarounds like the electoral college fraud. It's not about state legislators fabricating a facsimile of their citizens will. It's about every individual citizen voting and that their vote totals are the sole determining factor of any candidate's worthiness to serve simply because otherwise, we are ruled by the unworthy.
If our governing representatives hold office through a process that discounts the will of the majority in any aspect, the government is illegitimate. Any and all attempts to reconfigure that sublime simplicity are corruptions and, when implemented, will always have no good and enduring result.
We will not be best or glorious or brave or free or a "shining city on the hill" or durable or admirable or memorable or a lasting symbol any more than any bloody war lord, oligarchy or dictatorship which has darkened the pages of written history since writing began. Our fallen soldiers and PTSD laden households will have suffered and died for NOTHING. The oft-lauded expense in blood and treasure we currently tally will be but a footnote in a depressingly predictable summary of the wasted effort and needless display which has befallen our species from before history.
Democracy is the ONLY answer. Everything else is just common death, a testament to unending self-destruction.
