The Kerch Bridge destruction could cause a panicked exit by citizens out of Crimea.

The bridge was the back door out. The other exit is over land in Ukrainian territory. There could be a scenario where people try to flee right past the fighting, causing traffic jams for both civilians and the military. We’ll see if Ukraine can get closer to the front door.

So they might fare better by fleeing to Ukraine instead of Russia

if Ukraine is able to attack Crimea? Many of them don’t seem all that interested in dying in this useless war. I read some speculation earlier that Russians had blown up the bridge to prevent Russian soldiers from leaving Crimea. If so, that plan could fail spectacularly if they just surrender instead, and it would fit right in with Russia’s incompentence.

That threat is the only thing keeping them from surrendering en masse. Ukraine often protects the identities of surrendering soldiers and reports them as captured during battle.

The bridge wasn't the only exit. They still have ferry service and undoubtedly the military has transport ships, but all of this assumes Putin will allow a retreat. That isn't likely to happen unless the Ukraine military actually crosses into the region.

With the "land bridge" a dangerous, highly contested stretch of territory, it's the only way back to Russia proper.

While I suspect that there’s a serious shortage of ferry boats in Russian waters in the Black Sea, some panicky folks might be able to evacuate by water, even if it means that at most they’d only be able to take a suitcase or two and have to leave their automobiles and washing machines behind.

It'd be nice to shut of the water flow again, too.
