He was one of dozens who was involved in the choice of Palin, and only after McCain rejected more conventional choices like Romney and Pawlenty did he settle on her. Even when the moment came to make the call, he declared it a big risk, as did McCain's wife.

McCain made the choice, anyway. In the end, it's ALL on him. Nobody else could make that call. Only he could.

Once the choice was made, what else could Schmidt do as a campaign manager? He believed in John McCain, and figured Palin--well, she'd be tucked away as VP with the occasional public appearance talking to schoolkids or something like that.

Was it a failing to stand up for his candidate's choice, rather than walking away and revealing what an idiot she was? Yeah, but he woke up to it and has atoned for it. That's more than most rwnjs have done.

Know who is most to blame for Palin? Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes, Dick "Toe-Licker" Morris and Rick Lowry. They spent months pumping her in the rw media ecosystem, long before Schmidt had anything to say about a VP, one way or another.

and Trump insiders who saw specific instances of the man being the unhinged, ignorant bigot that he is and said nothing at the time. A bunch of them have written books or otherwise cashed in on this knowledge--which the public deserved to know at the time.
