The new folks are meh. The skits have been meh. Perhaps I am just too old to "get" some of the humor. Same old spewing blood bit. Photography skit wasn't funny. I could go on but I am not impressed at all. It's maybe a good thing. One less thing to record and watch each week. Lord knows the DVR is full of other stuff.

(47,438 posts)I fast-forwarded a lot as I often do these days with SNL. I haven't watched this week yet, but someone said the open included more dumb ageism jokes about Biden, so I think I'll pass.

For starters, I don't sense any new breakout stars.

(15,612 posts)The loss of eight cast members and at least one writer and the addition of four cast members is bound to shake things up.
Some of the sketches have been OK, some cringe inducing and some head scratching. Only a few have gotten me to laugh out loud.
Cecily Strong will be back next month, so well see how it goes until then.
For perspective, look at the 1980-81 season- the entire original cast and writing staff left, as did Lorne Michaels. The season was awful, but it was the debut of Eddie Murphy, who got better as time went on.

(10,900 posts)The new people need to find their footing. It happens every time there's a turnover.

(16,379 posts)So, I can pull up those skits on youtube and I don't have to watch the entire show. I do adore Bowen and I finally got used to Che and Yost.

(26,328 posts)I pretty much only watch clips on YouTube. Mostly Weekend Update. Che and Yost crack me up.
The show has always had filler skits that were stinkers.

(32,639 posts)I remember thinking the same about Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

(21,871 posts)also it always bothers me how it's so obvious that they are reading the cue cards. I get it they don't have a long time to memorize skits, but they don't even try...
I fast forward through most of it these days.... I'll see who the music guest is and I'll watch weekend update...

(9,073 posts)SNL has always been one or two good sketches peppered with mediocre ones. But when people think back on "the good old days" the handful of good sketches stand out and the mediocre is forgotten. That's why when you ask people when SNL was good, the answer will depend on how old they are. They're mostly just remembering the time it was relevant for them and plucking out the good stuff.
Another thing to keep in mind is how people are watching it. It isn't staying up til midnight on Saturday night anymore. Most people will wait until Sunday morning and watch it on YouTube. SNL and Sunday morning coffee is a regular thing with me.
Last night stands outs were the "Think You Won't Snap?" game show (Kenan snapping the instant Elon Musk is mentioned) and the Try Guys parody (Bowen as Eugene was hilarious and "I'm gonna go see what ketamine's about," ).
People are mad the President was made fun of. The audacity. A comedy show. Making jokes about a President. Has anyone heard of something so outrageous in their life?!
(It's precious).

(4,104 posts)The original cast was the best. After that, with a few exceptions, it was all downhill for me.

(16,387 posts)Its not meant for that audience. And its a sketch comedy show. Skits are for summer camp talent show night.

(15,417 posts)Just like Generation Xers like myself prefer the mid 90's years, Boomers like the original cast.

(53,061 posts)And that it has been trendy to criticize for some time
Doesn't mean that it hasn't become mediocre at it's best and that most of the time it is barely sufferable.
All three things can be equally true.

(9,012 posts)Of course, I'm pretty good at that already. I wonder what McKinnon is going to be up to?

(13,180 posts)I'll be glad when and if Cecily Strong returns. They need her experience.

(9,012 posts)But I'd say, "The Three Stooges" for one. Even though I have seen every one of them, they still make me laugh.
To show you how old I am, how about a good variety show on TV, a la Carol Burnett or Laugh-In or the Smothers Brothers?
Are you under 40?

(29,674 posts)It will take time to adjust, to find cast members strengths and weaknesses, etc. They need time to develop characters that will be memorable and they need time just to get into a groove.
It's no different than anyone starting a new job.
