If your a fan of Human Rights (and why shouldn't you be?), ...
you have to learn about Peter Norman.
Today is Peter Norman Day
Tommie Smith wins the gold medal in the 200m race, while Peter Norman surprisingly takes silver and John Carlos winning the bronze, in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
When they were getting ready for the medal ceremony, Smith & Carlos realize that they forgot to bring the second pair of black gloves. They didn't know what to do, so Norman suggested one wears the right glove and the other wears the left glove, which they did (see image).
Both were wearing the Olympic Project for Human Rights pin, so Norman asked if they have any more pins. They got another one and if you look at the medal ceremony image, you'll notice his white pin above the Australian logo on his warmups.
He suffered dearly for that decision back home in Australia, but when he died, Smith & Carlos went to Australia and were his pallbearers.
