(3,650 posts)it's only logical Ryan distance himself from Biden. Hence all of his tv ads touting his siding with Trump on trade. Yeah, it sucks, but it may make just enough difference for him to get elected, and that's all that matters.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) says "Kamala Harris is absolutely wrong" when she says the border is secure:
"I'm here to speak the truth. We have more work to do, which is why I have a resolution to designate fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction."

"Secure" is nebulous; it means what the GQP wants it to mean: scary browns coming for your jerbs.

I get that some don't care, as some want open borders. That's cool, there are all different levels of liberalism. But the majority don't support this, especially in Ohio.
honest.abe
(8,685 posts)Especially a border as long as ours with a neighboring country whos population is extremely poor and desperate to get here. A Trump wall would not be secure either. They figured out how to get through portions of that stupid wall within hours.
We are doing our best to secure the border. But we also have compassion for those people who want to come here. Its how America became America.
maxsolomon
(33,398 posts)people from all over the hemisphere are crossing illegally and legally, and many are claiming asylum, which is legal.
they're desperate or they wouldn't be coming. the crisis of anthropogenic climate change is only growing worse, plus Venezuela's collapse, plus the drug cartels, plus RW paramilitaries, etc.
intractable crises out of the US' control (but for which we bear some responsibility) are driving it, not that some liberals are cool with "open borders". the US border is not "open"; it's overwhelmed. the borders of Europe are overwhelmed, too - it's a global crisis.
was the border "secure" before jan 21, 2021? my impression is that a "secure" border became a problem for democrats on jan 22, 2021.

(47,583 posts)Democrats don't need to be seen as fighting one another and we certainly don't need Democrats undermining a very successful presidency.
This is such a shame, as I finally was warming up to Tim Ryan. It took quite awhile for me to get over him challenging Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. It turns out she is one of the most effective House Speakers ever. So now he is saying the Democratic president shouldn't run for reelection? I don't know, maybe this will help him in Ohio, but it can't be good for the Democratic party overall.

(998 posts)Our leadership is on the older side. The good news is that they are GREAT at their job. But we do need to be looking to the future. Here in Ohio the backbench is pretty thin and it puts us at a disadvantage in some of the races.
To his credit Tim often states the uncomfortable truth.
FWIW - I am voting for Tim Ryan and every other Democrat up and down the ticket
W_HAMILTON
(7,871 posts)...and, worse yet, is likely to turn off some Democratic voters that are not engaged as many of us are. In particular, I can very much see certain minority voters that are very supportive of Biden turning against Ryan because they see him as shitting on Biden and what he has accomplished for them and instead is choosing to bend over backwards to earn the support of MAGA Republicans whose vote he will NEVER get.
Oh well, I guess it's a win-win regardless. Either Tim "I'm a Democrat that hates Democrats" Ryan wins the Senate seat (unlikely) or he loses and we don't have to hear him in office bitching about Democrats anymore.
DFW
(54,436 posts)He could have easily said, "I would prefer a younger person from a younger generation. Of course, if the president chooses to run for re-election, that is certainly up to him." That sidesteps the question, and pushes the debate moderator to move on.
Being totally realistic doesn't work for Democrats in red states, so I think we have to cut Ryan some slack here, distasteful as it might seem from the safety of our keyboards. After the midterms, the reality becomes, "1.) What has Joe Biden accomplished? 2.) Does it look like he can keep it up for four more years? 3.) If not, who should replace him at the head of the ticket?"
The obvious answer to #1 is PLENTY!!
The less obvious answer to #2 is Who the hell knows? He sure seems to be doing a fine job so far. It would take an exceptional 80 year old man to keep up what he has been accomplishing so far. But up til now, Joe Biden has proven himself to be most exceptional.
The answer to #3 is a minefield. It's dangerous to NOT offer the nomination to a younger, loyal sitting VP if he/she wants it. The immediate response is "why not?" and the answer "she might well lose because she is by far not the strongest candidate" will NOT sit well with much of OUR base. I happen to believe that is true, but what I think doesn't matter. Who should be our presidential candidate if Biden passes, and Harris is passed over? The names Buttegeig and Klobchar come to mind, but a new Barack Obama could just as easily come out of nowhere, saying the right things, and bringing crowds to their feet. House members rarely get elected directly to the presidency, but Eric Swalwell might be the sort of candidate to electrify the crowds. We have some talent, but we turned out to have a LOT more talent in Joe Biden than most of us ever thought possible, I'm not ready to toss that aside just yet.
