Fact-checker shreds Trump's newest excuse for stashing classified documentsOn Monday, FactCheck.org deconstructed a particular claim from former President Donald Trump that other presidents had stashes of government documents comparable to the one the FBI raided his home in Mar-a-Lago to seize and revealed it to be completely false.
"Trump accused several of his presidential predecessors of storing White House documents, including ones that were classified, in unsecured warehouse spaces," wrote Robert Farley and Lori Robertson. "For example, Trump said, 'George H.W. Bush took millions and millions of documents to a former bowling alley pieced together with what was then an old and broken Chinese restaurant, they put them together. And it had a broken front door and broken windows. Other than that it was quite secure. And there was no security.'"
This prompted a tweet from Jeb Bush, who replied, I am so confused. My dad enjoyed a good Chinese meal and enjoyed the challenge of 7-10 split. What the heck is up with you?
The problem with Trump's claim, is that "all of the examples Trump mentioned were cases of the National Archives and Records Administration not the former presidents themselves storing documents in secure facilities, while permanent presidential libraries were being built." For example, in the case of Bush, "none of the presidential records, including classified documents, were in Bushs possession or in his personal residence," and the former bowling alley was specifically retrofitted as a storage space to securely hold classified material.

I looked up Trump's accusations. None of them, of course, involved intentional removal of classified documents. Bush's records were indeed "stored in a bowling alley"--a bowling alley that had been converted to a secure storage facility and was routinely used to store sensitive materials.
The "documents" in Bill Clinton's sock drawer were personal audiotapes Clinton made during his presidency, for his own use. The Washington Times, rw "journalism" personified, sued to have them returned; the judge found that the tapes were indeed personal and the property of Clinton.
Jimmy Carter left a small card, called the "biscuit," in a suit pocket which did indeed go to the dry cleaner. This was not "the nuclear codes;" the "biscuit" is a cheat sheet condensing the steps the president has to take to use the nuclear codes.
Funny that Trump didn't mention that Ronald Reagan's biscuit ended up in a plastic bag in the hospital when he was shot.

(33,643 posts)people pay all sorts of attention to him.
So he does it, again and again.
Except in his case, it's just 'flat-out lying and gaslighting at EVERY opportunity'.
He's found that has a very similar effect to the 3 year old's actions.
He does it because, mentally ... he is a fucking 3 year old.

The false claims and rhetoric are intended to form the narrative echoed by rightwing media that feeds his base and, to the extent possible, gaslight others who are insufficiently informed.

(6,017 posts)Please note that the materials were being categorized and organized by staff from the National Archives.
The stuff of George Bushs life--an old infielders mitt, the door of a Kuwaiti palace, even a huge likeness of Bushs head from a Republican convention--is being sorted in an old bowling alley. Of course, theres not enough room in the old Chimney Hill Bowl for 36 million pages of documents, a million photos and 40,000 objects. So some of it is crammed next door, in what used to be the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant. Someday, this will be the treasure of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M; University. But for now, its just pile upon pile of Bush fodder for the archivists.
Our job is to preserve, arrange and review and ultimately try to make as much available as we can to the American people, said David Alsobrook, acting director of the Bush Presidential Materials Project.
The actual library and museum--an $83-million project--is about 90% complete on an engineers drawing board. Groundbreaking is planned for November with dedication in 1997. That means Alsobrook and his staff of 10 researchers from the National Archives have three years to catalogue and organize items that filled four C-5A cargo planes in the days just before Bush vacated the White House in 1993.
