MBS and Saudi Arabia have become aligned with TFG and Putin. The US needs to take this into account and should cut back on arm sales and take other actions with respect to a country that is no longer our ally

I think the presidents been very clear that this is a relationship that we need to continue to reevaluate, that we need to be willing to revisit, White House spokesman John Kirby said on CNN, reiterating Bidens disappointment in the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners.
Certainly in light of the OPEC decision, I think thats where he is, Kirby said. And hes willing to work with Congress to think through what that relationship ought to look like going forward......
The cut in oil production helps Russian President Vladimir Putin as he wages war on Ukraine and was seen as a possible trigger to increasing gas prices in the United States weeks before the midterm elections, when Democrats slim majorities in the House and Senate are in jeopardy.

(5,104 posts)Fortunately, Joe Biden is very well-suited to the task.
Without other options to fill the short-term gaps (other than the inevitable thaw with Maduro's Venezuela) the president can't just blow up "the relationship." On the other hand, he can't just let this pass w/o consequences for the Saudis.
Russia doesn't have the naval capacity to keep the sea-lanes of the Persian Gulf open should a simmering military conflict with Iran turn hot.
The obvious longer-term solution is to move way from oil. That's important for the existence of life on this planet and for our own geopolitical concerns.
The Saudis are really working against their own interests here.

Has the price of a barrel of oil dropped due to consumers cutting back and decreasing demand? Won't cutting production to raise the price lead to even less demand? I thought oil companies were already hauling in record profits.
