Biden to reevaluate U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia, White House says

MBS and Saudi Arabia have become aligned with TFG and Putin. The US needs to take this into account and should cut back on arm sales and take other actions with respect to a country that is no longer our ally

President Biden is starting to rethink what the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia should look like after last week’s announcement by a coalition of oil-producing nations led by the kingdom that it will slash oil production, a move Biden had warned would push up gas prices worldwide and bolster Russia in its war against Ukraine, a White House spokesman said Tuesday.

“I think the president’s been very clear that this is a relationship that we need to continue to reevaluate, that we need to be willing to revisit,” White House spokesman John Kirby said on CNN, reiterating Biden’s disappointment in the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners.

“Certainly in light of the OPEC decision, I think that’s where he is,” Kirby said. “And he’s willing to work with Congress to think through what that relationship ought to look like going forward.”.....

The cut in oil production helps Russian President Vladimir Putin as he wages war on Ukraine and was seen as a possible trigger to increasing gas prices in the United States weeks before the midterm elections, when Democrats’ slim majorities in the House and Senate are in jeopardy.

on MSN or CNN (listening on Sirius). She agrees with Biden on doing something but also said she thinks this move will backfired on Saudi Arabia because it will make people/governments move more toward other sources of energy.

Fortunately, Joe Biden is very well-suited to the task.

Without other options to fill the short-term gaps (other than the inevitable thaw with Maduro's Venezuela) the president can't just blow up "the relationship." On the other hand, he can't just let this pass w/o consequences for the Saudis.

Russia doesn't have the naval capacity to keep the sea-lanes of the Persian Gulf open should a simmering military conflict with Iran turn hot.

The obvious longer-term solution is to move way from oil. That's important for the existence of life on this planet and for our own geopolitical concerns.

The Saudis are really working against their own interests here.

And announce it a month before U.S. elections? Putin? TFG? Both (Axis of Evil)? How far in advance was it planned? Is it an attempt to influence the U.S. elections?

Has the price of a barrel of oil dropped due to consumers cutting back and decreasing demand? Won't cutting production to raise the price lead to even less demand? I thought oil companies were already hauling in record profits.
