Like "hey guys, you can't escape Russia through normal ways, get in, get sent to the front, then manage to do the same as fast as possible: voila, you're free" (explain it to your brothers in Ukraine why you did it).

The last one that I know of, a great-grandmother, came over as a 4 year old girl in 1878. I guess unless you were REALLY up there in status, life in the Russia of Alexander II wasn't especially pleasant, although I can't imagine people who spoke only Russian had a fabulous time in New York in 1878 either. She ended up marrying another immigrant, one from today's Slovakia, then still part of the Hapsburg Empire. I only spoke to her in English. She was still around with all her marbles when I was past 20. Who knows WHAT else she could speak. Much was lost in my family, and the languages other than English spoken by my parents were all learned either in school or as adults. Maybe the reason I learned 8 others besides English is that I felt a hidden genetic hole tugging at me to be plugged.

confrontation with the commanders and wanting to get out of Ukraine and return home. Therefore the puppet mayor of Kherson was told by the Kremlin to evacuate Kherson. The mayor complied and told the people to flea to Russia.

Many sane people believe that Russia again is stealing Ukrainian citizens.

they depopulate the areas they occupy of Ukrainian patriots before they hold the elections. They did it in Crimea and in Eastern Ukraine. IIRC, they did it in Chechnya as well.

It's one thing to defend your home; it's something else altogether different to die because of an a-hole's ego trip.
