I shudder to think where we would be today without the leadership of Nancy Pelosi. When the Republicans shot down the idea of a bi-partisan Commission to investigate the attack upon our Capitol, Nancy worked with Minority Leader McCarthy to create a bi-partisan Congressional Committee to do the work. McCarthy tried to slip in a couple of insurrectionist sympathizers and Nancy immediately advised him to get two different members that were serious about the investigation.
However, McCarthy balked. At the urging of Donald Trump, he withdrew all Republican members of the proposed Committee.
The whole idea of a Committee to investigate the crime of January 6th could have fallen apart at that time. But Nancy persisted. She recruited two Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, to serve on a bi-partisan Committee.
Where would we be today if Nancy had not created the Select Committee? Where would we be today if we had depended on the Justice Department to do the investigation alone? I doubt that we would have half the information we have today.
Nancy Pelosi kept the issue alive. She was not going to let it be swept under the rug or let it die without the facts being presented to the American people. America owes her a huge debt of gratitude.
Then yesterday, we saw the new video from January 6th, with Nancy taking charge and leading the defense of our Capitol. All this time, we were told that it was Mike Pence that called the National Guard and got the re-inforcements to the Capitol. We now see that it was not Pence. It was Nancy Pelosi calling the Governors of Maryland and Virginia to get them to send National Guard to assist them. She called for assistance from their state police forces. She called the Mayor of DC to get help with more police to help clear the Capitol.
Although Pence did an admirable job of sticking to his guns and daring to come back to lead the count of the electoral votes, it now appears that it was Nancy Pelosi that was calling in the National Guard to clear the mob and to protect our democracy.
Also, it now appears, in my opinion, that her actions foiled the master plan of Trump and the insurrectionists. In my opinion, some Republican that was close to Nancy, as she was calling for the state police and the National Guard, may have called Mark Meadows to let Trump know that the National Guard was on its way and they were going to clean up the mess in the Capitol. That is when Trump decided to give his "love you" speech to his mob. The QRF, with their stash of weapons across the river, did not have time to make it back to occupy the Capitol, which was their plan, in my opinion. Their coup had been foiled.
Nancy Pelosi deserves a whole lot of credit.

(67,800 posts)It is at times like that I don't like being old. I want to see how she is treated 25 or 50 years from now.
She will not be forgotten. Greatness always stands out.

(11,563 posts)Most of her "due" will probably not be given in her lifetime - maybe not even our lifetimes, although I hope so. Both investigations and history will bear out her assessment of the situation, and her efforts.
It needs to be far sooner than 25 or 50 years, though. I fear you are right with that, as well. For good and bad.

(3,859 posts)the depth and scope of the entire conspiracy to overturn the election, subvert the Constititon's provision of the peaceful transfer of power and overthrow a legitimately elected American government would still be a secret. The conspiracy goes back months before the election was even held.
This is in the hands of the voters now. And I mean, the voters who will go to the polls this November. We will see if there is any real patriotism left, or if our country has become so absorbed in self-interest that the people no longer care about their freedom or democracy. Every vote cast for a Republican politician at this point is a vote against American values and patriotism.
And I hope the Democrats who are working elections and part of the voting and counting process are on guard, because there will be all kinds of corruption and attempts to cheat.

(3,056 posts)You can see him in the video standing close to her when she took charge of that situation. But he was still enough of a Republican to get his sorry ass in front of the cameras and join the chorus of those blaming her for the lack of police/National Guard response. And I know a vast majority of the folks here know this, but for those who don't, guess who IS responsible for calling out the DC National Guard. Yep...the POTUS, because Washington DC doesn't have a governor.

(15,216 posts)All I've seen of her before is when she gives a speech or makes a press announcement. Of course, we can all see the end result of how well she manages the House.
But seeing her like this in behind-the-scenes video, she impresses even more. The arguments that's she's too old and that we need "new blood" don't hold up at all. She's really a force to be reckoned with.

(1,654 posts)Showing up start? All of a sudden it seemed to be a given. But damn, Nancy is a badass!!! My friend has been saying for years that it's time for Pelosi to stay home and enjoy her grandchildren, but she's amazing!
Me.
(35,454 posts)I don't think anyone without her experience and fortitude could've held this country together the way she did.

(58,660 posts)This analysis makes sense. Pence is a follower who basically did his job, at the absolute minimum level. Ms Pelosi and Mr Schumer were the ones making moves behind the scenes. Kudos to Speaker Pelosi. When the shit hit the fan, we were lucky to have her where she was.

(574 posts)a monument after her . Maybe name a highway after her near Maralardo. The entertainment value of watching GOP heads explode would be priceless.

(3,818 posts)coins and other buildings were done in order to keep GQP funding, which they threatened to pull if they didn't get their way. The law is supposed to allow cooler heads prevail and keep the politics out of it, but as "we" all know with the GQP, they exploit everything to get their way.

(2,035 posts)her for the past twenty years, the other side might just recognize her immeasurable skill, value, and patriotism as well.
I cannot believe the extent to which they have trashed our beloved Madam Speaker and that they actually hunted her down on January 6. Thank God they did not find her.

(25,980 posts)On fairly rare occasions I have my differences with Nancy Pelosi, but when the chips are down, I am so grateful she is in our corner. She has deep knowledge, a backbone of steel, and fierce determination like nobody's business. I adore her.
Thank goodness for Nancy on January 6. She, with help from Steny Hoyer and Chuck Shumer, was the driving force that finally got the National Guard response and brought the situation back under control in the Capitol so that the electoral vote would go forward.
Thank you, Madame Speaker!

(9,760 posts)Which is, of course, why the despicable, unpatriotic RW mob wanted to kill her. That revolting video of the murderous insurrectionists demanding she be brought to them is nightmarish.
Thank goodness Nancy stood up to them, but the fact that there are so many of them is terrifying.

(43,170 posts)Apparently he thought the whole thing would fall apart without Republican members, and that none of his party could be recruited. Worth noting, Democratic leadership, and the duality of the old Democratic-Republican cooperation in the political middle - compromise - that gave Bush-Cheney victories during their reign, paid dividends here. Liz Cheney stepped up for several reasons.
