Governor Ron DeSantis has made voting easier in certain Florida counties battered by Hurricane Ian – but only Republican-leaning ones.

DeSantis signed an executive order on Thursday that eases voting rules for about 1 million voters in Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota counties, all areas that Hurricane Ian hit hard and that all reliably vote Republican.

Meanwhile, Orange county, a Democratic-leaning area which experienced historic flooding from the storm, received no voting exceptions, reported the Washington Post.

The accommodations include extended early voting days and the ability for voters to send mail-in ballots from addresses not listed in voting records.

Voting rights groups had previously asked the governor to extend the statewide voting registration deadline, which ended on Tuesday, and to add more early voting days, as well as implement other accommodations.

DeSantis complied – but only for the three Republican counties.

If the Bush v. Gore lawsuit taught us anything, it is that the Florida Supreme Court does not like arbitrary handling of voting ballots.

"Lawsuit time" was the first thing that went through my mind. I definitely smell a class action lawsuit on behalf of the voters of Orange County.

I can see the lawyers down there sharpening their knives and licking their chops as I type this. I hope they get him good!

I have no faith in that state's legal system. Or rather, I trust that it is exceedingly biased and unafraid to be blatant about it.

35. DeSantis sent the first doses of the Covid vaccine to his wealthy donors at the Ocean Reef Club.

Oct 2022

From the Washington Post: "Last week, former Illinois governor Bruce Rauner (R) was inspired to donate a quarter-million dollars to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s war chest."

"The hefty donation came about a month after Rauner’s ultrawealthy and exclusive community on the northern tip of Key Largo received enough coronavirus vaccine doses for 1,200 residents over the age of 65, according to a Miami Herald report on Wednesday evening."

"That vaccine access — at a time when many other elderly Floridians struggled to find doses — combined with donations to DeSantis by Rauner and more than a dozen other residents in the Ocean Reef Club have raised new concerns among critics of the Republican governor’s handling of the pandemic."

“'This is wrong on so many levels,' state Sen. Annette Taddeo, a Democrat who represents part of Miami-Dade County, said in a tweet Wednesday night. 'Floridians life saving vaccines should NOT depend on a rich zip code or how big your political contribution is!!!'l

Most of his voters are not "ultrawealthy and exclusive". Oh well. Maybe his less lucky voters won't be around to vote for him this time.

Lots of questions unanswered. How have or have people displaced by the hurricane get notified of changes in polling places, times drop boxes etc.?
