So how come the men on NPR get to talk like grownups, while the women....

.... like Mary Louise Kelly and Elsa Chang (and a number of others) have to talk like nursery school teachers trying to get a three year old to get excited about cookies after nap time?

1. Elsa Change has a lovely voice and Mary Louise Kelly's voice is unique.

Can't really imagine that there's some man standing over them, "Sorry, your voice isn't soothing enough, it may upset some misogynists."

4. Sometimes people think it's specific women when it's really that they hear all women as preschool

teachers, unless the women make an effort to sound firm and authoritative, at which point the radio station gets letters about women who sound mean and unpleasant, and also like preschool teachers.
