(17,441 posts)Insulin is used by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics.
Without insulin, Type 1 diabetics will die very quickly, no matter what they eat.
Without insulin, Type 2 diabetics who have the disease bad enough to require insulin will also die no matter what they eat, perhaps a bit more slowly than Type 1 diabetics will, perhaps not. But make no mistake, they will die as well.
So, put your fucking "insulin patrolman" badge back in your fucking pocket, you stupid motherfucker.

(34,073 posts)It is possible to eat very cheaply in a way which, at least if started early in the disease process, can control the disease symptoms. Although the menu might be pretty boring. I have enough money I don't have to eat on the cheap, but I typically do anyway. My diabetic-friendly diet generally costs me $2 - $3 / day. (Typically a bean or chicken-based soup. I use a rotisserie chicken $5-$6, which makes enough soup for more than a week, plus a couple of straight meat meals. The last one came from Walmart - so you don't need a fancy store to get one. The bean soup is often lentil. Sometimes chick peas, always made with (cheaper) dried beans. I spent the main ingredient with whatever is on sale (or whatever I have tucked away in my pantry), veggies from my garden or second from the grocery store or local veggie stand. I am grateful my frugal eating is a choice - but because it is how I eat most of the time, I know it is possible.
But the issue isn't eating. People don't eat themselves into diabetes, even if they are T2. And once you get to a certain stage, diet may not be enough. And it is never enough for those with T1.

(34,073 posts)1. it isn't about diet at all for T1 diabetics,
2. even for those wtih T2 diabetes, a diabetes-compatible diet can be maintained for a couple of dollars a day - as cheaply as a non-compatible one. Just because I eat frugally by choice does not change the reality that a diabetes-compatible diet is not any more expensive than a non-compatible one.
