I think most of DU WILL like it (but I've been wrong before!).
Our Ukrainian neighbor was just here, talking about the Russians kidnapping the mayors
of small Ukrainian towns, expecting them to collapse and surrender just because their mayor
was gone. Having served with the Soviet military, he said this was in keeping with the Russian
military mentality:kill the commander and the troops are helpless. He said that all kidnapping
the mayor would end up doing would be to strengthen the resolve of the townspeople against
the Russian invaders.

(25,939 posts)Your comment about kidnapping a mayor got me thinking: the Russian paradigm of power distribution favors the strongman. Military operations are by necessity fairly centralized in command and control, but the Russian military concentrates power in the generals to an even greater degree. Naturally, they assume everything else functions that way, so theyd envision a clueless lumpen proletariat standing around awaiting orders.
I believe the Russian system as it exists is rushing headlong toward eradication. They need to rejoin the community of nations, but I believe those in power dont have the wherewithal to move forward. Unless it comes from the Russian people, progress wont happen.
The best scenario IMO is for Putin to be toppled or he fucking croaks. The oligarchs and anyone else wielding power in Russia will probably look for another strongman; hell, they chose pootin because they wanted someone most closely resembling Pinochet - a murderous bastard who had no problem killing however many citizens it took to put down rebellion or anything that smelled like it. He fucked around with Ukraine and by extension NATO, and now finding out that his murderous ways are not good for business. The oligarchs wont tolerate that much longer.
Anyway
I got sidetracked. Gonna tie er up with my hope that the Russian people can work together and take advantage of any disruption in the command and control network by grabbing a good fistful of democracy for themselves. Stepping into the 21st century would be great too. Realizing that you cant build an economy on natural resources, armaments, and internet trollery, would be a wonderful enlightment for prole and oligarch alike.

(54,384 posts)His comments on the combat-worthiness of his Russian colleagues are worth an anthology by themselves. He said there was a unit that was attacked by the mujaheddin. It had 166 men, 16 Ukrainians and 100 Russians. The Russians all took off like scared rabbits and left the 16 Ukrainians to try and hold off the assault. They obviously did, or he wouldn't have been at our breakfast table to tell the tale.
His German is pretty good, better than my Russian, but he prefers Russian, which is much closer to his native Ukrainian that German is. His Russian still has the telltale soft gutteral Dutch "G" which, in Europe, anyway, is only heard in Danish, Dutch, Ukrainian, and in Spanish if before E or I.
I showed him the video this morning, and he got a laugh out of the visuals, but he doesn't know much English, so the finer points were lost on him, unfortunately.

(14,902 posts)what a horrific situation (within the general horrors of war) for him, and his 15 other compatriots to be in.
My dad (2nd gen) spoken Ukrainian to his dad so I'd hear it here and there, and in Ukrainian Catholic Church. I took Russian in JHS because I hated French (it was from the French teacher in gifted class grade school), and wasn't thrilled with Spanish (I didn't have knack for languages). It was one of only 3 JHS in NYC that taught it in 9th grade.
I did know that Russian & Ukrainian had some similarities thought maybe I could talk a bit with my dad. I didn't know yet really about some of the animosity between them when Russia took them (and others) over, and became the then USSR. I also thought it was a bit cool to learn a different alphabet, though having to put up w m, f, and n written, and verbal endings.
I did well - 85. When I went a specialized HS they didn't have it. Since I was still a bit antagonistic about French I got stuck w Spanish. Of course, living in "Nueva York" it's useful for though I don't remember that much. I did learn to enjoy French later in my twenties.

(54,384 posts)"his murderous ways are not good for business"
Indeed they are not. Anything but, in fact. If making even more money than he already has stashed away was his ultimate goal, he could have pledged to respect a thriving independent Ukraine that was a de facto part of the EU, and made similar deal to open up the Ukrainian-Russian border as a free trading zone. Both countries would have had booming business, and Putin would have been celebrated as a hero genius by both Russian AND Ukrainians. Modest taxes on businesses would have filled the coffers of both governments, and the biggest job opportunity in Russia would NOT have read, "cannon fodder for the Red Army, funeral arrangements with free flowers, and a medal for your family." The second and third biggest being, as I see it, travel agents booking one way flights out of Russia, and those faking travel documents allowing draft age men to leave.

It was my idea, and I wrote it, directed the music effort by The Freedom Toast in Atlanta from afar. I guided the general direction of the video, but most of that was by Cinebot. Alison Daye is very good at what she does, and has an uncanny instinct for what I have in mind..
These were a few others that were done the same way:
When our partners, the Parody Project get involved, it can come out like this (I still write them):
&t=2s
The three of us are usually involved in varying degrees. TFT and I usually do the music and soundtrack, Cinebot sometimes does the animation, or else Parody Project does it. If the voice calls for someone like Paul Simon or Cat Stevens, Parody Project also does the vocal.

So you and friends, colleagues put these together?
Or you know the people who do, and they listen to your
input?
Really funny! Since I also saw it fully on YT I saw the list, thumbnails of others that I'll have to take a look at. 👍
ETA: I see from Cali Peggy you Do work on these w others. 👍
Do you write? Come up w initial ideas? Do digital art/videos? Do you & friends/colleagues have multi roles/talents so it varies?
2nd ETA: Now I just read post #13 which explains your process more.
(And "Freedom Toast" 😄
It confused me for a second: then I remembered it was "Freedom Fries" back in the day )
ETA: #3 ( 😄 )
PLUS ah, then there's Cinebot (Alison D), Parody Project for the digital graphics, and animation.
OK you answered this, too. v (ETA #4)
And you do some if the editing of that?
One of those times when I should have read most 😂 or all of the posts First for my answers! Ah, well.

(54,384 posts)The way it usually works is: I get an idea (usually out of nowhere), think it over, write it down (or I forget it an hour later), work on it for an hour or two until I'm happy with the lyrics.
Then I get in touch with my musical partner, TFT's keyboardist and head arranger in Atlanta, and ask if he knows the song to be parodied. If so, NP. If not, then I send him links so he can get familiar with it. We mull over instrumentation, then he decides which vocalist is best for the number (worry about backup singers later), and does a "scratch" either in or with the studio (this is all in Atlanta). In the music "biz," a scratch is just a preliminary one-time take to have something to work with/on, and send around (or, in this case, to me) for editing/approval/rejection (sometimes they just pick the wrong singer). If I think the song best fits the voice of Don of the Parody Project (out in the Pacific Northwest), I say so from the start, and if Don agrees, then he does it.
Don is just as good a guitarist as I am, and if it's a simple number, like Moon Shadow or Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation, he might even do the whole thing himself. If it's a sophisticated sound track (and Rubles Worth Nothing was DEFINITELY that), then TFT does it in Atlanta.
Then we send the sound track on to Don to see if he wants to do the video (he is an accomplished videographer as well). He usually, though not always, says to give to Alison at Cinebot. Alison sends me clips as she goes along, and I say either OK, or suggest edits.
When I'm happy with the whole package, it goes to Don for posting on youtube, unless he does all the video, in which case, he has full autonomy from me to run it when he's done (e.g. the Rock Around The Clock parody).
There you have it from start to finish. Keep your day job, but it's a LOT of fun to have as a hobby!
**Once, over 10 years ago, the Guardian in England asked me to do a song about one of their politicians. Unfortunately I had never heard of the guy, so I had to check him out. I thought of the English Sea Shanty "Blow The Man Down," since I had laid down a guitar track in Atlanta, myself, before leaving for elsewhere. It was intended as a Dick Cheney song, but I used it for Blow The Man Down about this guy, John Prescott. TFT filled in the instruments, sent me the track here in Düsseldorf, and I did a vocal, with several overdubs so we sounded like a chorus of drunken English sailors. The studio in Düsseldorf sent it back to our studio in Atlanta, who mixed it. The sent the mix over to the Guardian, who did their own primitive video to it, and put it up on the Guardian website. At the time, we had a way to monitor who viewed it, and it turned out that 90% of the British parliament had viewed it. It helped that the Guardian kept it up on their website for years. Prescott passed away and they took it down, so I couldn't tell you where to find it now. A friend of mine in London said it took about six months for him to stop singing it to himself, for which he never forgave me. All I have now is the sound track.

For musicians depending solo, a group, extra session people, and the personalities it's still very good to play together when that works vs each one laying down their tracks, the singer (or singers) in their booth.
(🤔 Been in a recording studio ?2xs back in the mid late '70s as a graphic designer, paste up mechanicals person for a small indie record company)
As for ideas (I'm an visual artist) since I'm just doing things for myself for a good while some things will suddenly pop up and be interesting to pursue. Usually I scribble a big thumbnail down, or a few variations.
Other things might be partial ideas (I might make a note or two about that) - over time coalesce with other things to become somethhing. Finally I'll also get get inspired by something I've seen in real life, another person's work etc
I like to work by myself. There have been occasions where working together on project has been really interesting, fun, or both.
The Brit thing sounds funny.
(Though all that popped into my mind immediately was Prescott Bush 🙄 )

(32,639 posts)... but it's also slightly deceptive. You're suggesting that Putin wants to go back to the old USSR and the communist regime. He has no interest in going communist! Pootie is one of the wealthiest men in the world. He'd have to give up all his wealth and power if they went back to communism. Nope, not happening.

(54,384 posts)Both my parents were musical, and I was exposed to a LOT of different styles over the years. My dad took me to a Harry Belafonte-Miriam Makeba concert in Washington when I was about 12, and I never forgot how I loved it. In DC, all sorts of artists came through. Over time, I saw Andrés Segovia, Ravi Shankar, Leo Kottke, Jimi Hendrix, and the National Symphony Orchestra. My teenage rock band was selected to open for Canned Heat, Junior Wells and the Youngbloods. All left an impression.
The Freedom Toast was formed during the Cheney-Bush years. Our first video was primitive by today's standards
We were active until Obama was elected. We sort of went into hibernation during the Obama years, as there wasn't much to make fum of then. All I did then was the Talking TSA Blues video.
Then 2016 happened, and the stirrings began to recur. We did "Respect for Hillary,"
but didn't really get back into high gear until I saw Don Caron's Parody Project, and was really impressed by his work, as well as his following!! I sent him a few of my lyrics suggestions, and he finally decided he wanted to do one with me "Wasting Away Again in Mar-A-Lagoville."
&t=20s
I only did the lyrics to that one, but for some of my suggestions, he thought the sound track was beyond his scope, and my friend in Atlanta and I rounded up The Freedom Toast again (like the Blues Brothers--we got the band together again). Someone in Atlanta suggested we get in touch with Alison of Cinebot to do some video work for us, and as she seemed very much in tune with my own way of thinking, we brought her aboard to do some of the more sophisticated videos, such as Rubles. As I mentioned in a post above, Don did the video to The Supreme Court/Rock Around The Clock video, so our efforts are usually a mix of varying proportions of input. Only the ones I write will have the "Freedom Toast" designation. Don is quite prolific in his own right, and has done plenty of inspired videos on his own or with other collaborators.
We thought that when Trump was out of office, that we'd have nothing more to do. Hah! Were we wrong about THAT, or what?
The number of collaborations we have done with the Parody Project now number in the dozens. During the Trump years, we regularly got hundreds of thousands of views, a couple of Don's even got over a million. He said Youtube put in some kind of restrictions on politically themed videos, especially if they favored the left, and the numbers dropped off dramatically. If there's some kind of monetary reward for numbers of views, I'm unaware of it, and don't care. I'm in it for the fun. If we get a few hate comments (and we always do), I consider that a bonus, since it means that instead of ignoring us, the extremist right is watching and is concerned.
We have one commenter from the far right that always changes his name. He started out as "Mystery of the Ages," or some such ridiculous name, and always chooses something in that vein. I always bug him by saying, "our old friend, the Adulation of the Aardvark, is back" In one of his latest incarnations, "FromAcrossTheDesert," his comment on the Turning Back The Clock video was, "I wonder if people thought it was "turning back the clock" when they repealed prohibition?" My answer to that was, "They probably thought it was about time Washington stopped listening to a minority group of control freaks, and came to its collective senses--the same thing the country will say when Alito and his Opus Dei pals see their action undone." As usual, he had no further comment.

(2,738 posts)I'm glad I found a channel where I could subscribe and get them (I first looked under the name The Freedom Toast). They are very share worthy! I like the idea of the extreme right watching in concern.
One thing we on the Left do so well is humor, like those letters in a Revolutionary vein back home when there was the RW rumor was the Left was going to launch a revolution on the 4th of July. Brilliant stuff and just maybe it defuses some of the tension and anxiety.

(4,076 posts)Your parody brings back memories of a politically incorrect song by Dire Straits, which is now dated, e.g., by the reference to "color TVs" (as if there were any other kind). Speaking of dire straits, the bridge over the Kerch Strait was IMO a legitimate military target. The old KGB thug has a lot of nerve calling Ukrainians terrorists just because they probably had something to do with the explosion.

Knopfler's gratuitous barb at Elton John has been eliminated from some later versions, and rightfully so. To this day, I am unaware of the two of them ever collaborating on anything, where he has done musical collaborations with an amazing spectrum of musicians. I'm frankly surprised it passed the watchful eyes and ears of his record company even 38 years ago. Knopfler has never put anything of the sort in his lyrics before or since. I have to think something happened between the two of them 40 years ago that never made the news, but nevertheless left deep scars.
