(21,636 posts)I, too, live in a mostly RW area - and I don't so much as mention politics with the neighbors.
Many of them are Q-heads who think Harris "controls" Biden - and that "she's out to get us."
"We'll be alright, I'm sure" is the most I dare say.

(21,636 posts)My experience is that when they do back down and skulk away, it means that you can expect trouble in the near future.
I once lost a good job in retaliation for the very thing, in my younger and and more vocal days (must've been around the time of the Clinton impeachment).
And that's what I see them trying to impose nationwide: A kind of state of siege, not unlike some 3rd world countries, where merely speaking out against them is tantamount to trouble.
I remember an uncle of mine visiting Paraguay in the '80s, toward the end of the Stroessner regime.
He was polite - but before long the conversation in the café inevitably shifted to Stroessner.
"Excuse me, señores," the visibly shaken waiter approached them, in a hushed tone. "But we don't say that name here."
That's what Repugs want. Not all of them, of course - but the Chumpkins and Q-heads, definitely.

... that's the kind of thing they accuse Democrats of wanting -- and if there's any single way to understand Republicans it is that anything they accuse you of is something they are themselves doing or wanting to do. Their every accusation is a confession.

(21,636 posts)I suspect around half of Republicans these days are certifiable sociopaths.
Have you read Genki Hikari's experience after revealing he wasn't a RW mouth-breather? It's horrific.

(1,766 posts)I posted a very small (letter-size paper) supporting the anti-Iraq war movement. Right after that, this is what we experienced:
Code compliance came out and literally measured my grass with a ruler to see if they could cite me for not mowing it often enough.
My mail box was pulled down so many times that I stopped re-installing it and have had a PO Box ever since.
Animal protective services came out over a dozen times to accuse us of our indoor-only cat terrorizing the neighborhood.
Had the cops come out to accuse us of stealing the cat we had before we even moved into the neighborhood. Thank goodness I still had the adoption paperwork.
Child protective services was out multiple times to make sure my kid was okay. Apparently, the sounds of "a beating and a boy screaming" were heard coming from my house. My son wasn't even home at the times in question--either out of state for court-ordered visits with his dad, or hanging out with friends outside the house.
The most disgusting garbage was thrown into our yard, and into the truck bed of a guy who was staying with us while his family fell apart. This happened sometimes EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. That ended when the guy staying with us saw someone doing the garbage toss, ran outside, and held them at gun point until the cops could arrive to cart their asses off to jail for vandalizing his property. Right in front of the guy's screaming wife--and their screaming brat in a pram.
He also had to pull a gun on a woman who was leaving passive-aggressive notes on his truck to get a vehicle that wasn't so ugly or loud.
After the gun incidents, both of which happened while we were on vacation (DANG!)(oh, and paid or by family who wanted to see us), NOBODY has dared to cross us again. For years, people wouid cross the street, rather than take the sidewalk in front of our house. Good riddance to worthless trash.
The point is: None of that was going on, until I put up that one little sign in my front window.
I've never put up anything political again.
This is the kind of crap we live with in red states. Telling me to move is salt in the wound. We've always been blue-collar working class, so money's always been tight, but when my health went south, I couldn't work anymore. That's when we became working poor. Moving is a luxury we cannot afford.

(5,801 posts)into violence, threats, and other intimidation, because they can't win on their arguments.
There was an essay written a few years ago in which the author stated--sorry, I can't remember his name--that he no longer expresses his political views openly because the other side can't be trusted to hold civil discourse. If he states his opinions, he is at risk of violent harm.
That's what the other side has descended to.
