At the gym I couldn't resist the guy shaking his image as Biden was on the TV. Keep in mind this was an old white guy, I look like a fellow traveler. I asked what's up? Cue the music, the firehose of lies began: inflation it's all Biden, 6 January was the FBI, we need to get out of Ukraine, that MAGA who was shot by Capitol police was a hero, it went on.
I listened and said you know Chump is the most corrupt person on the face of the earth. I left him with his traitorous mouth on the floor. Old white guys, with military haircuts, not all the same.

(9,998 posts)Excuse me if I don't want to go down with a sinking Fascist ship. That's the way things are headed.
Between all the MAGA Morons, Gun Violence, Abortion Restrictions, and the ones yet to come like Prayer In Schools, I really am disgusted with the path America is on.
Most people couldn't care less about how things are falling apart all around them. I shouldn't have to fight to maintain a decent existence. And if you think that it's our patriotic duty to sacrifice our very existence to salvage decent values, while others constantly put up road blocks, then go right ahead.
I'd like to enjoy my final years alive, and not be stressed out every single day.

(9,998 posts)The proliferation of guns and the daily gun violence is enough reason to want out. I don't see that changing in my lifetime.
I feel ashamed and embarrassed, and the way people dealt with Covid was pathetic. So yeah, I'd rather live in a Progressive country like Denmark, New Zealand, Australia, among others, where belligerent Pieces Of Shit like MTG, Gaetz, Jordan, DeSatan, Cruz, Abbott, aren't wielding power and making things worse on a daily basis.

(14,427 posts)Just one old gal here.
When Trump won in 2016, I went to bed, pulled the covers over my head and cried. The next day I began to plan for the day I might need to leave the U.S.A. My grown kids thought I was crazy. By the time Biden was running against Trump, they didn't think I was so crazy. Biden won and I began to be more hopeful. But, people, we are still in a very dangerous place.
The thing is that when fascism begins to take hold you need to pay attention and make a decision about what you are going to do, and when you are going to do it. Never forget what happened in Germany. People waited too long to leave or, sadly, had no means to leave. The result was horrific. Others decided to stay and fight. Most died heroes. Neither decision was easy.
As for loving or hating the U.S.A., sometimes our emotions of the moment or the times take over. This is a great country in many ways, especially for the principles it was founded on, but it's history is not all rosy. We've had our dark moments, quite a few of them, in fact. I don't always like what my country is up to. Other times, I'm very proud of the U.S.A. I guess, in the case of our country, we are always working toward that more perfect union.
Countries are not inherently evil, people are evil. Well, evil has risen in the U.S.A. and we all must make our own personal decisions of what we will do: leave or stay and fight for that more perfect union. God bless us all and God bless America.

(6,831 posts)From time-to-time facts are irrefutable but when they contradict the neo-con, nee MAGA bloviation they are and have always been quickly ignored due to some shiny new object to fascinate over. Whether it is the latest conspiracy, the newest both-siderism or a new group of "inner-circle" knowledge bearers to join, throwing in so that the facts can never quite make it all the way into the brain where it would stand, incorruptible and lasting because it's........true.
That is the secret behind the idiocy. These idiots are so Pavlovianal* (harshly self-trained/auto-hypnotized to refuse contradiction of their OCD impulsive thought processes) they never give facts a nano-second to dwell in their minds. It could be a side effect of the ingredients in craft beer or Starbucks but it's probably that they don't have much success with the opposite sex and idolize those that appear to.

supporters do not really care what is published-they only want coverage of their outrageous, uninformed statements. They follow their leader in the unquenchable thirst for above the fold coverage.

(4,483 posts)it's up to us older middle-class white folks to be present in the lives of MAGGOTS. That's why I make sure to fly my big American flag every day, to emphasize my Shapiro for Governor signs (PA).
One of our MAGGOT friends who is totally poisoned by Fox abruptly started paying attention to what my husband was telling him about propaganda when he visited my husband's office and saw all the certificates on the walls. I guess he decided that someone who'd graduated from so many places and won so many professional awards might know something he didn't.

I did have one nutjob around here that I've known almost as long as we've been in this town.
He's got 5 big TFG flags, another with an Ar-15 on it, campaign signs for all the fascists running thus year.
He saw me at the Minute Mart a couple days ago. Said hi.
I told him I don't talk to traitors to our country.
He looked shocked. I didn't give him time to reply. Just walked out to the car.

A few times, I've seen a MAGAt coming, either wearing a tRump shirt or one of those stupid hats. I just make sure they see me look and as I pass by quietly say "he LOST, get over it" and keep walking. No point in standing around arguing with them. Once, I really enjoyed it because it happened as I was walking out the door of a QuikTrip. I kept walking, but that apparently set the MAGAt off, because he started yelling crap about "tRump won he's gonna save us". No one else heard what I said, but when others turned to look, there was a nutbag yelling about tRump for no apparent reason.
I still laugh about it, and hope I can provoke more of them to make fools of themselves in public.

You never know if there's a sympathetic, or open, ear within earshot. Remember all the Republican legislators who, when pressed, concede that trump was wrong and horrible and reprehensible and all that, but they support them BECAUSE THEY'RE AFRAID NOT TO.
That mob made a big impression on January 6th. A powerful impression that would not be ignored. Hell, we're STILL seeing video clips of the melee at the Capital, and they're still having a real, and current, impact. And these weasels want only to be reelected. All they want is to keep their jobs. Because those jobs mean power that they wouldn't have, as an average person back home. So principles and good government be damned.
I'm not sure what to do except to keep backing the good guys and keep their backbones well-supplemented.
What I AM sure we should NOT do - is give up.

(17,920 posts)Until they find out we most certainly don't. I know the look you're talking about. It's priceless.
My answer to their ranting about trans issues drives them nuts. It's simple. Why...do...you...care? Why do you care? What is it to you? How on god's green earth does that affect YOU and YOURS in any way, shape or form? That's usually followed by stammering, a red face and then something about god, abomination, two sexes or something along those lines. Ignoring the biology of it, my retort is, then let your god deal with it. What? He's not big enough to handle some trans folks on his own? Well, supposedly he did say "do unto others as you'd have done unto you" ...and DIDN'T qualify it. Equivalent to my "treat everyone equally." They're happy so leave them alone. Go get all pissed off about something that actually DOES impact you, or at least could, like the price of insulin for instance. Ugh.

I consider it a civic duty whenever MAGAt crap is spewed.

I can out-ignorant them any day!
But yeah, don't judge us older white guys by our looks, who we are goes deeper than that.
Anyway, other people are insulted if you lump them into a group by their appearance, and respond to the stereotype rather than the person.
(People wearing white pointy hats and white sheets and carrying flaming torches are the exception of course. And people randomly shooting up a crowd. It's safe to make some assumptions about who they are.)
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,854 posts)... my "clean cut" appearance, trying to avoid standing out in the crowd.
Several of my coworkers, past and present, have openly discussed their right-wing authoritarian bullshit with me... as if I'm guaranteed to agree with them. They later act especially angry with me when they discover otherwise, as if my appearance was an effort to deceive them.
They should instead look at facial expressions. Since I'm rarely angry-looking, that should be their main clue that I'm not one of them.
EDIT: In recent years, though, many of them seem to like the "biker" look. Lol!
