I've had Covid for 8 days straight and still testing positive.

I’m still sick and this is one wicked virus. I’ve had all my shots and even the newest one two weeks ago.
I think I got this at my Democratic fundraiser.
I’m done! No going around around anyone the rest of the winter.
I don’t even want anyone at my house without a mask.
All this time I’ve dodged this masking and staying in.

I even had my one friend poke fun at me.
I spent my last 2 years in my house fearful of this virus with good reason from my younger years narrowly escaping pneumonia from Guillain Barre at age 20
Nothing funny about about my fearfulness a bit!

The rest of my winter will be spent away from people and a mask every place I enter as before.

Here's a link on Covid. I am doing similar!!! I've also had all of my shots, but have not caught it, and not taking any chances.

https://news.yahoo.com/nightmare-covid-variant-beats-immunity-025733218.html

A new subvariant of the novel-coronavirus called XBB dramatically announced itself earlier this week, in Singapore. New COVID-19 cases more than doubled in a day, from 4,700 on Monday to 11,700 on Tuesday—and XBB is almost certainly why. The same subvariant just appeared in Hong Kong, too.

A highly mutated descendant of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that drove a record wave of infections starting around a year ago, XBB is in many ways the worst form of the virus so far. It’s more contagious than any previous variant or subvariant. It also evades the antibodies from monoclonal therapies, potentially rendering a whole category of drugs ineffective as COVID treatments.

“It is likely the most immune-evasive and poses problems for current monoclonal antibody-based treatments and prevention strategy,” Amesh Adalja, a public-health expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told The Daily Beast.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that the new “bivalent” vaccine boosters from Pfizer and Moderna seem to work just fine against XBB, even though the original vaccines are less effective against XBB. They won’t prevent all infections and reinfections, but they should significantly reduce the chance of severe infection potentially leading to hospitalization or death. “Even with immune-evasive variants, vaccine protection against what matters most—severe disease—remains intact,” Adalja said.

As the novel-coronavirus evolves to become more contagious and more resistant to certain types of drugs, keeping current on your boosters is “the most impactful thing you can do in preparation for what might come,” Peter Hotez, an expert in vaccine development at Baylor College, told The Daily Beast.

i have noticed the numbers in the US have been dropping steadily since July but I don't even know if I believe it since Covid is now being treated like the common cold. you get sick, maybe you take a home test, maybe not, but either way it doesn't get reported. most people don't even bother staying home so it just gets passed on that much more easily. so seems like cases are being massively under-reported which makes me scared that nothing will be done when this next wave comes through. Cases will still look low because they don't get tested and reported.

Psychological Disorders Linked With Symptomatic COVID-19 Infection: Lancet Study

A Lancet study involving an Indian-origin researcher has linked symptoms of COVID-19 with worse mental health and lower life satisfaction.

Researchers from King's College London and University College London in the UK found that rises in psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and lower life satisfaction were associated with prior self-reported COVID-19.

The associations with poorer mental health did not lessen over time after infection, highlighting the potential enduring impacts of the disease and the need for a longer follow-up process from healthcare providers.

"This study brings together many of the UK's longitudinal studies to provide a comprehensive overview of the impacts of COVID-19 infection on population mental health," said senior study author and professor Praveetha Patalay from University College London, also an Osmania University graduate from Hyderabad.

The study, part of the COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing National Core Study, was published in The Lancet Psychiatry.

Self-reported COVID-19 was consistently associated with psychological distress, regardless of whether people tested positive for antibodies to the virus.

These effects of infection were felt similarly in different groups of gender, ethnicity and socio-economic circumstances.

The study suggests that the infection of COVID-19 might impact mental health most in older people, as people with self-reported infection aged 50 years and older showed a stronger association with poorer mental health.

This might reflect that older people are more likely to experience more severe COVID-19 symptoms, greater worry around the infection, and increased risk of blood vessel (microvascular) or brain (neurological) changes after infection.

"These findings suggest that there were prolonged mental health consequences of COVID-19 infection for some people at the beginning of this pandemic," said Dr Ellen Thompson from King's College London.

I was craving fried okra. The place was packed and we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. It was a cool evening and most everyone was milling around inside. Still, the two of us were the only people masking. My son refused to wait inside and sat out on the front porch; I followed him. At least no one criticized us about trying to remain safe which surprised me.

Along with spending more than just a few minutes with a room full of unmasked people doing anything like singing, yelling, etc..
Followed by just being in a room with unmasked people.

This is with a mask on or off; mask on however gives you a far greater time to be in the environment before you are likely to catch it. Stay in long enough though (ie days) and it's likely you will even with a mask.

We as a society really need to smarten up about this.

They have had a pretty bad outbreak of Covid. There have been about four employees and at least 35 residents so far that have been sick. Very shocked when last Monday I looked at the daily count and eleven residents had developed it. I decided best I stay away because I take drugs that suppress my immune system. She really can’t communicate very well sadly because of her dementia. Could do FaceTime but all she does is stare or put her head down. Unfortunately several (including my Mom) don’t understand the importance of wearing a mask and they can’t physically force it on them.

63. That's how hubby and I caught it.
Sun Oct 16, 2022, 06:50 PM
Oct 2022

We went out to lunch a few weeks ago with our kids and son's fiance. Kids and fiance had Covid in July (probably caught that from the autotrain or Disney). Our kids still live at home but hubby and I never caught it from them. I think I caught it from venturing out to lunch the end of September (immune system is recovering from cancer treatment but I'm fully vaccinated). I came down with it (sinus symptoms/fever/lost of taste/smell) 8 days after being exposed. Hubby came down with it about 7 days after me. I tested positive until day 17 even with Paxlovid and 10 days of double antibiotics. Hubby had Paxlovid and is on day 16 but hasn't taken a test to see if he's clear yet.

This version seems to be spreading like wildfire. In 2 yrs, our singing group of 33 has had a case here and there. We've been very careful and mask whenever together or rehearsing. For the first time since returning in Jan 2021 we had to call off weekly rehearsals - more than a third of us were in some stage of COVID incubation, quarantine or recovery -- and that was with all of us being vaccinated/boosted (requirement to sing). Another of our groups also stopped rehearsals for at least 2 wks due to infections (there is a bit of overlap between the 2 groups).

Truly, we should have turned around and left. We are both well-vaccinated and I've already had a very mild case, but I know I'm tempting fate. Plus, it took us another hour to get our food because the kitchen was so short-staffed. I felt terrible for our server because he was getting abuse from the diners about the slow service and it wasn't his fault. I gave him an extra tip. When we finally got our food it was barely warm. Definitely not worth the risk we took. I regret it.

Sun Oct 16, 2022, 10:48 PM
Oct 2022

Our local [car brand] dealership's service dept has a 4 week lead time because so many mechanics & other staff are out with COVID.
The local county library is only partially staffed.
We stopped going to our usual grocery because all but one of our usual cashiers were out...with COVID.

This is what happens when Republicans - Addison "Mitch" McConnell specifically - refuse since March to fund any federal COVID tracking, vaccine or public education programs.

But the media and local officials are partly to blame, too. Along with the CDC they've been promoting "live as though life is back to normal" for months, and if history is any indication they won't change their messaging until it's too late.

We're on our own now.

Make good choices.

My doctor told me that any test given for a long time (think many months) after active covid is going to come back positive not because you still have covid but because your body is still full of antibodies. You still feel like shit, but probably your active disease is over, and you'll be getting false positive tests for a while now. I'd stop testing myself for at least a couple of months.

FWIW I was fully vacc'd and boostered when I got covid. I never went out without a mask (still don't) but one stupid error was all it took--traveling with a disabled friend who was unable to wear a mask (although she, too, was fully v&b). You probably would have been a lot sicker if you hadn't been v&b.

It's a nasty, sneaky disease with symptoms that nobody (apparently) knew about. My husband and I never had a fever, even in the depths of covid, and we did not lose sense of smell or taste. Fatigue was our biggest problem.

I learned from the female friends who had covid that every one of them had a UTI concurrently, as did I (no symptoms of that, found at the hospital), and my hair has thinned (coming back). I've never had headaches, and now I do.

I think scientists still aren't 100% knowledgeable about the all the possible symptoms of this disease, nor how long they last.

re: masking and avoiding crowds. I understand your caution given your GBS background. Our son had GBS when he was 11. He’s now 39. He too has been really cautious. None of our family do fly shots because of family history of Guilian-Barre. You are doing the right thing. Wishing you the best.

we give each other a thumbs up followed by an "atta girl" or some other brief comment.

Just curious - did you get Paxlovid or some other treatment?

... when I (apparently) caught the Omicron strain during a BRIEF Walmart visit in August just to buy some screws, and I foolishly didn't wear a mask. I also walked behind someone in the store who I'm pretty sure was infected, a special-needs young adult who kept yelling at his mother that he didn't "feel good".

I was never terribly ill, thankfully, but I've never had such a runny nose in my life (for about three days). I just stayed completely isolated at home during that period, especially since a mask would've been filled with my mucus in little time at all!

My last positive result (when I felt completely recovered) was faint:

After that I was still fatigued for another week or so.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I've heard mixed reviews but if you're still sick after 8 days then it's worth asking your doctor about it.

and feels kind of yucky. We've followed all the precautions, too, but our luck ran out. So far so good for me. I managed to get the bivalent shot in before he came down with it, so maybe that saved me. This, too, shall pass.

it's stories such as yours that keep me masking and living like a hermit for the most part.

My son had it in the early days of Omicron and continued to test positive for 11 days. Hopefully you'll soon feel so much better.

Ordered masks in Jan 2020 and we've worn them since.
Minimized contact with people.

Had Covid three times.
First time, traveling back home when it all started - before we knew what it was.
Second last Xmas probably from grocery shopping early in the morning with a mask.
Third time from the dentist - had to have a tooth pulled.

Last time, I tested positive for two weeks.
That was 2-3 months ago. Still feel the effects some.

Fortunate in avoiding catching this virus. I’ve had all my shots except this newest one and always wear a mask. I don’t see anytime soon that I will not wear a mask when in public. I get looks of consternation from some but f’em.

I hope you get to feeling better and are back to 100% soon. This is a very nasty virus that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Take Care.

68. I'm recovering from Covid

After four weeks still have the Covid Cough, but have been back at the gym (masked) for the last two weeks but can't run again yet because I get breathless. But this is what happened with the testing:

At the beginning I felt like I was coming down with a cold and the husband felt sick, so we both tested - his was positive, mine was negative. He went on Paxlovid, I carried on. I tested again two days later, still negative, still feeling like I had a cold, he was feeling his old self again except for a cough. Then that night I felt really ill and the next morning was almost nonfunctional. Tested again - now I was positive!

Went on Paxlovid. Five days later I tested negative. The DH, who had felt well after his symptoms went away (never more than a small cold) still tested positive. He continued to test positive but was riding his bike in the mountains and having no problems. I continued testing negative with a hacking cough, loss of taste and fatigue.

He began getting a complex about it. I asked him - would you rather be in my shoes, feeling miserable but testing negative, or not having any symptoms, taking five hour bike rides in the mountains and testing positive?

PERSPECTIVE! I said. Grumble grumble, he said.

Finally, at day 9 he tested negative!

I am still negative and whereas my cough is improving, it's still a problem. My energy is coming back and I'm still at the gym.

All the smoke from the wildfires is not helping, though.

So, hang in there! The testing is not always an absolute, it's a guide.

I think we caught it at the football game.
