Maybe the guy found out who his daddy was and was in despair. That would make anyone sick. Imagine being told that your dad was actually Hitler. But there will be plenty of speculation about this. The truth about this could be just about anything.

Perhaps it was guilt over sending untold thousands to an extremely likely death. He would be privy to battlefield reports and state, no doubt.

Anyone in his position would have to be a world class psychopath to NOT be depressed and guilt ridden over what he was being made to do. And I'm sure death would have been the only escape open to him. The second he refused to do Putin's bidding, he would have been a dead man walking. Might as well make his exit on his own terms.

Of course, some are probably ordered by Putin, but others are Putin's allies. Did they have a falling out (no pun intended) or could there be a rogue group within the security forces that is knocking off some of these loyalists, to send Putin a message. IIRC, there was some intel "leakage" to the Ukrainians by some in the security forces.

Inspector Renault says that in the official report on Ugarte, they haven't decided whether he committed suicide or was shot while trying to escape.
