That might be a mistake.

Representative Steve Scalise, the number two House Republican, defended his partys approach to Medicare and Social Security, which has become a campaign issue ahead of US midterm elections in November. Its a mis-characterization to say the GOP plans to cut the programs, Scalise said on Fox News Sunday.
As part of the on-air appearance, host Shannon Bream asked the Louisiana congressman about the proposed budget plan from the Republican Study Committee, which Scalise is a member of. As Politico noted, the plan, among other things, included proposals for raising the eligibility ages for each program, along with withholding payments for individuals who retire early or had a certain income, and privatized funding for Social Security to lower income taxes.
Yesterday was an opportunity for Scalise to distance himself from the document and its recommendations. He did largely the opposite.
Will an overwhelming majority of Americans ever understand that Republicans don't give a shit if they suffer and die, (in old age, or long before that). THEY DON'T FUCKING CARE ABOUT YOU! What is it, Republican voters, what is it you don't understand about that?

(15,057 posts)I don't think there's a Dem "plot" to ignore this. I just think we could use some really savvy advisors who know how to hit back where it hurts Republicans. Politeness, and "playing nice" doesn't count when dealing with those who don't give a shit about you, and outright fascists who want to own you. Forever.
They seem to think voters know these things. They don't. There needs to be a Lincoln project for Democrats. There never will be.

(145,553 posts)The GOP want to cut Social Security and Medicare in order to be able to expend The TFG tax cuts. A vote for a republican is a vote to cut social security and to extend the TFG tax cuts
Link to tweet
https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2022/10/17/republicans-tax-trump-biden/
With Democrats likely to lose control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate, Republicans are preparing to advance legislation that would make permanent the GOPs 2017 changes to the tax rates paid by individuals. Republican officials will also push for scrapping some of the laws specific tax increases on corporations that were designed to offset the cost of their enormous overall cut to the corporate tax rate.
Many economists say the GOPs plans to expand the tax cuts flies against their promises to fight inflation and reduce the federal deficit, which have emerged as central themes of their 2022 midterm campaign rhetoric. Tax cuts boost inflation just like new spending, because they increase economic demand and throw it out of balance with supply. But Republicans say they believe these efforts would put Biden in a political bind, requiring him to choose between vetoing the tax cuts giving the GOP an attack line in the 2024 presidential election or allowing Republicans to win on one of their central legislative agenda items.,,,,
While President Biden and congressional Democrats are fighting to make middle class families the heart of our economy. Republicans want to sell those families out to rich special interests and by doubling down on their 2017 tax giveaway to the ultrawealthy and corporations, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said.
The fight over Trumps tax cuts could become a key feature of divided government should Republicans take control of one or both branches of Congress. Congressional lawmakers and the White House will have to come to agreements over funding the government, averting a breach of the debt ceiling and other spending bills negotiations that will give the GOP an opportunity to press their policy demands. Democrats used control of the House after the 2018 midterm elections to push Trump into accepting many of their priorities, such as expanded domestic spending and paid leave for federal workers......
But Republicans say they are committed to extending the cuts. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has been providing real, substantial relief to families and businesses, said Rep. Jason T. Smith (R-Mo.), the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, in a statement. We need to build on that success by making permanent those policies that are supporting families and workers while looking at what more needs to be done to the tax code.

Currently back burner while we investigate the attempted internal coup d'etat. But note that national disruption (from pandemic disease and/or other) is a standard technique used to help facilitat overthrow of governments.

(2,809 posts)I read recently is the richest congressman, heartless example of why our representative government isn't representing 99.9 percent of us.
He and the grumpity Stuart Varney ilk nearly drive me to go "postal".
It's especially the poor-bashing sort who, if challenged to get a start in life with a backpack, no home and given 10 dollars and told "rotsa ruck" would knock that chip off their privileged shoulders royally.. Knowing no one, no connections, just perseverance to succeed at making something of myself, sometimes so tired from riding the bus to the beach showers or colllege gym weekdays, never letting on to my classmates that I was homeless. I was so frugal once my scholarship and grants came through but still ended up homeless often. Quite often I had to sleep in hiding places I got very creative about.
One experience like mine would serve a lesson in humility the likes of Trump, Varney and these silver spoon fed "sunset social security" MFers deserve for their insolence and way-off base criticism that the poor lack perseverance.
I've worked damn hard for the Social Security retirement income I'm presently filing for. I didn't want to collect this early, but finding it very difficult to find work at 63 despite an excellent reputation in what I do.
It took me 10 years to recover from college debt. It took far longer to gain a credit rating that didn't cost me exorbitant interest on everything, got further screwed over by two total lemons that left me way upside down on vehicles for 20 years more. Dodge and Volkswagen of America received detailed letters regarding the dishonesty they cost this hard working citizen thousands of dollars, never even got a reply. I have to credit GM, however, when I had a similar problem with two of their vehicles- they fixed it for me!
My home has wheels. I've never been able to even start on owning or building a home. I couldn't even afford the permit.
I'm on unimproved property I bought long ago. I can't legally stay here.
I'm nearly broke to the point I'm down to rainy-day canned food supplies. I'm going to have to sacrifice some yard sale stuff soon just to get fresh grocery money until my first Social Security payment comes through, or, by some miracle someone hires me.
Then, probably off to a BLM LTVA for winter.
It makes me so damn mad they're trying again to steal what little survival money I worked so hard, so long to earn. Make no mistake, "privatize" would leave nothing left for the recipient.

(2,809 posts)GWB was full-on "privatize social security" throughout his term, and we all know what a cold theif he is.
My whole life now fukked thanks to them. Seriously.
Public option: GOP opposed. Now I'm laid off and can't get my cancer treatments. My doctor keeps calling. Nothing I can do now in my situation.
I can't sign up for any assistance because they've legislated me out of having an address via Louis DeJoy's dulosenfranchise poor voters trick. I'm now essentially homeless on a remote piece of property I bought long ago.
The organization that laid me off, no severance thanks to more GOP fuckover of travelers. Ineligible for unemployment: same issue.
The organization that laid me off is one of the biggest, richest and very GOP organizations there is. Hired two students to replace 2 experienced caregivers, saving a few hundred dollars for their multi-million dollar budget.
I'll drop below zero in a month, quicker than I can secure my social security. If the bank closes my account for default then the social security has nowhere to go.
I hear nothing from job prospects. No one wants to hire a 63 year old caregiver.
I'm hauling what I can to a desperate yard sale off my nearby remote freeway exit. It'll be countless times I've had to sell off good things for pennies on the dollar to survive.
I'm too old for this shit. My blood pressure pounding my head and if it weren't for my loving dog I'd have shot myself through the head this morning.
It's just another hell I find myself in from having a ten dollar start on adulthood and countless times of falling through the cracks largely thanks to pretentious and religious tightassed GOP assholes.
I paid off a hospital bill, barely breaking even just before I learned I would be unemployed in 2 weeks. I shouldn't have done that.
I keep asking myself what the hell I ever did to anyone to deserve getting screwed, over and over.
The answer is being honest and caring. It doesn't pay.

So I set my goal at 500, plenty to do what I need, fresh food and if the best happens- get me to a job site.

4. Salvation Army is pretty good in some ways especially as holidays approach.
Are you sure you're not eligible for unemployment? At one time I was an Administrative Law Judge at unemployment hearings. I was amazed what people don't know about that area of law, including employers, human resource managers, and even lawyers. I'm not current on unemployment regulations. I hope some of these might help you, Lambchopp. I didnt see a date when this list was compiled, so it might be a good idea to call first to confirm services/days/times, to save gas.
Heres the link to the full list which has many more resources than those I wrote above.

(12,676 posts)For the short term, do you have a local United Way or does your local community have a 211 or emergency assistance hotline you can get to? A council member or state district representative?
If you're a veteran, is there a VA nearby that is active enough to find a short term program to assist you?
If you or a friend belong to an benevolence organization like the Elks, those organizations may also have access to short-term assistance.
Others will point you to some religious organizations that may also be able to help.
It's not begging when everything is falling down around you. We are a community, and we as the collective shouldn't selfishly put strings on helping others because no-one ever knows when disaster can happen to them.
No one is immune to health issues,to potential financial disaster (jobs or customers disappear, investments fail, bills pile up, scammers empty accounts, legal problems happen), or to natural disasters that make one homeless.
You're right, this shouldn't happen to anyone in a country as big and supposedly rich as the US. And greedy, short-sighted, narcissistic assholes are the primary reason we can't all have access to good things in this country.
I hope you can find help. And the strength to carry on.

(161 posts)self employed for 25 years. always did ok. Wife hasn't worked in 2,5 years due to long term covid and i have just developed "drop foot". Not a big deal except i work in the forest and mountains. Almost cut my leg off 2 days ago due to my inability to navigate the terrain with a chainsaw. Just cant do it anymore. FUCK! everything i own is for sale save my house for now. I had to shoot my best friend in the head last week because I couldn't afford the vet. Best dog ever! Cant get disability because I can't afford a doctors visit (just got approved for california care or whtevr. goes into effect on 11/01. A small silver lining...)...
In the meantime, tequila is relatively cheap and pot is almost free up here.
That being said, tomorrow is a new day...
best of luck friend.

(13,571 posts)Your social security can be issued to a separate Mastercard Debit Card issued by the agency to you. No bank required.
Every month, your SS shows up there, likely on the third.
Easy peasy. You can draw out cash, or you can just use it as a Mastercard. Or both.
The program is called US Direct Express. A government account.

(2,440 posts)...then for money, you can do fairly well doing this: go to the assisted and independent living facilities. Put your contact info on the bulletin boards and with the reception and other offices as a bath aide. Don't put your rate. When prospective clients call, tell them you charge between $20-$50 for a bath visit, depending on the patients level of care (and your experience, which sounds considerable). Each visit includes helping the patient with their bath, dressing, applying lotions, hair combing and hair drying if needed, tidying the bathroom before you go--this means cleaning up YOUR mess, not theirs. This is a much needed service and lots of people are glad to pay it so they don't have to deal with getting their loved ones to bathe. You get paid by the visit, NOT hourly. If you finish in 30 minutes, collect your money and leave. If you finish in an hour and a half, stay until the job is done. Be careful and ask questions YOU need to know about the patient too. All my patients are ambulatory dementia patients. I do well doing this work on the side. It doesn't take long to get a nice little client load going. 2 baths a week for most-- it's not a bad gig and you get to control what is too much for you. Good luck and remember, people care about you and want to help.

(2,809 posts)On my own place in a travel trailer unless use for building, requires the permit. They have some stiff regulations all about this stuff, very greedy beaurocrats that want to charge everyone fees to breathe. But:
It's the rig I usually use at RV parks for work gigs.
The irony is I'm so far remote no one knows I'm here, and probably unless I file for permits, no one will.
But it scares me too. No emergency services available: county won't issue me my 911 location unless I file a permit I'm ridiculously far from affording.
I don't plan on staying here "permanently"-- either a travel job will come through or my social security and BLM boondocking-- But I'm in a catch-22 about that at the moment, not having a mailing address, so waiting for a letter to arrive at my brother's home and he'll email me the scan. Then I can continue the application.
At this point I'm screwed no matter what I do. It will take the 6 week processing till the end of November for my first check if that's the only thing coming.
I might take these suggestions for a gofundme loan.
My signal is weak and I'm fading too.

Simple as that

(14,860 posts)That's what they think, and they're probably right. The Republicans will write their legislation so as not to touch the benefits of current recipients, but to completely screw over younger people. Old Republican voters hate young people anyway, so this would be extremely popular with them.
MadameButterfly
(1,062 posts)Republican lawmakers are wealthy and can live without it. Their constituents can't, but GOP leadership doesn't actually care about anybody who isn't wealthy, in either party. Their base are pawns in their game, easy to be bamboozled into voting away their own benefits. By the time they realize their mistake, too late. And they'll manage to blame Democrats.

(9,771 posts)I mean, RW politicians are spewing Nazi talking points, and half the country still supports them. They can be as blatantly evil as they like & still get elected. As soon as they can, they will immediately pass more huge tax cuts for the wealthy, then shut down Social Security, ObamaCare, etc.
If only people were able to see the truth, no Rs would ever be elected again. But too many can't. The brainwashing has been extremely effective.

(641 posts)Another latest trick of nursing homes is to send bills to friends/relatives of their clients stating they owe because the client gave them money, are hiding money for client, and/or took money from client. A relative of mine got one of those and told him DO NOT PAY. His mom is on Medicaid and if she's not, go after her financial power of attorney (and don't get me started on how far too many financial POAs manage to steal with no recourse).
