New: What happens when a state values a fetus more than a pregnant person? The answer is about to play out in Georgia.

I spoke with legal experts, physicians & lawmakers about Georgia's new fetal personhood law. They're all terrified of what's to come.

Georgia Says A Fetus Is A Person. The Implications Are Terrifying.
There's a uniquely dangerous provision in Georgia's abortion ban that paves the way for criminalizing pregnant people.

Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when she was arrested for being shot in the stomach.

It was 2019, and Jones got into a fight in the parking lot of a Dollar General just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. It escalated until a woman pulled out a gun and shot her. After being rushed to the hospital, Jones was in stable condition, but the shooting caused her to miscarry.
Jones, then 28 with a young daughter, was arrested. A grand jury returned an indictment for felony manslaughter, stating that Jones “intentionally caused the death” of her fetus “by initiating a fight knowing she was five months pregnant.” She faced 20 years in prison.

Jones spent time in jail, and her name and mug shot were splashed across front pages as the case drew national attention. But the charge was eventually dropped, in part because Alabama’s manslaughter statute prohibits women from being prosecuted for their pregnancy outcomes. Prosecutors also concluded that pursuing charges against Jones was “not in the best interest of justice.”

Vesting fetuses with full legal rights would have unintended and unfair consequences for women like Jones, which prosecutors belatedly realized. But such consequences have been a goal of the anti-abortion movement for years. After this summer’s Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which ended nationwide abortion rights, these efforts could endanger any pregnant person in any state that enacts “fetal personhood” laws.

You have to be a person first, and a fetus isn't a person. Personhood implies a personality, something a fetus is incapable of having.
You have to be born and have experiences in life to develop a personality.
A human fetus is no different than a fetus in the womb of a cat, dog, or any other mammal.
The difference doesn't occur until a human baby is born and takes it's first independent breath, at which point the angel that will connect to that body breaths a soul into it.
No breath, no soul.
It's not a sin to have an abortion. The sin is in forcing a woman to give birth to a baby she doesn't want. It's an act of brutality against both the mother and the child.

Thank You teammate. That is exactly what the Republican Party is today regardless of issue. An act of Brutality.

Pence and his zealots don’t give a flying dog fuck about baby’s. It’s all about power and control. Sane people know conservatives don’t know how to use power and control. Ergo the panic.

Remember the “snowflake” hysteria a decade or so back? That was about frozen zygotes languishing unused in the deep-freezes of fertility clinics. A lot are created that don’t get implanted. I mean, who in their right mind will try for the dozen or so “spares” when they already managed to get a pair of healthy twins?

But there are crazy people out there, ready to swear that IVF involves abortion.

If a fetus is a person with legal rights, by this fucked-up twisted logic, shits should also be treated as "persons" with legal rights, too.

Does that mean flushing a toilet is committing murder?

Can they build a prison big enough to house us all?

What fucked up people. They have completely lost their minds and any sense of reason or proportionality.

Now of course we're only lifestock, and if we want our rights to bodily autonomy, it's only through suicide that we can get them back.

Yes, a corpse has a right to bodily autonomy. Living women do not.

Think about that one, self righteous assholes.

Well they can be reversed now, but can tubal ligations be far behind? Especially when these same atavistic monsters want to make birth control illegal too? The thing is you need to take quick action if you're pregnant and need an abortion, but even if they make birth control illegal it's much more difficult to prove that you visited a snip clinic on your vacation to Europe. How will they react when demographically meaningful numbers of people start to do it? And if you're a women who'se gotten snipped, you still have IVF if you decide you really want to try for a family. Turns parenthood from an opt-out to an opt-in proposition.
