For those asking from around the world how Britain has gotten into this mess:
- The Conservative Party has always been obsessed with Europe
- This caused divides making the party hard to manage
- Back in 2015 then Prime Minister David Cameron had an idea

- He promised a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU if he won the election
- He won the election
- The referendum was held; 52% of people voted to leave the EU
- David Cameron resigned

- Theresa May became Prime Minister saying that “Brexit means Brexit”
- It turned out that nobody actually knew what Brexit meant
- She called an election and lost the majority
- She couldn’t get the Conservative party to agree on a Brexit deal so she quit

- Boris Johnson became Prime Minister promising to “Get Brexit done”
- He called a general election and won a majority
- The UK left the European Union in January 2020
- Major Brexit issues remain unresolved and it has negatively impacted the UK economy
- Boris Johnson was forced to resign in disgrace in July 2022 following a series of scandals

- Liz Truss was selected to replace Boris Johnson by members of the Conservative Party
- She announced a raft of unfunded tax cuts to “grow the economy”
- The economy collapsed
- She sacked her chancellor
- She resigned

Who could have predicted that?

Still others voted for it as a "send them a message" vote, believing it would never pass.

the garden path of stupidity by the Brexiters. There are no great trade deals out there for the UK better than one they had 22 miles away across the channel with 26 other nations not requiring tariffs and trade restricting regulations.

The pandemic slowed things down for a couple of years but now with things opened up again, Britain is realizing they screwed up and are on the outside looking in as their lorries stack up for 3 days to cross the channel because of new, Brexit-induced regulations.

Sad. They've got a demographic just as stupid as out megats.

Their economy is in sad shape, what with the new tariffs and trade-slowing regulations. What benefit has it been to Brexiters who favored it, other than to their pocketbooks?

voted for. The Brits voted for the "common market," in 1975, which was a trading agreement. But it turned into a monster that over-rode our sovereign democracy and whose function was to eat up our existing laws and churn out new laws that affected every aspect of British life, from how many hours you could work to the curvature of bananas, with law-making commissioners with an unelected president.

Increasingly, more and more power was transferred from British law makers to unelected and unaccountable law makers in mainland Europe.

Imagine if US laws were made in another country by lawmakers nobody could name or remove, and US politicians kept saying we are drawing red lines so more power stays in Washington, but they kept lying. I guess you would be pissed.

For many, it was a question of who runs Britain. For me it was always that Britain would be in a worse position to leave, but you have to understand this is more complicated than comparing all those who said no to Europe with Trump supporters.

against the powers of the European Commission. Of course, UK has an element of that feeling, but IMHO it is small.

The EU also created open borders, which means free flow of people throughout EU and poor Eastern Europeans could enter the UK or other wealthy EU nations without an immigration process, have a right to benefits, and be seen to take jobs away. This creates a lot of resentment. IMHO, it is a mistake as it will spark anger and discontentment among the people. It also feels racist to me, as we are talking about predominantly white Europeans given favor over people from other parts of the world.

Although I have always been against Brexit, I was always a firm believer that the UK should keep its own currency. Your own politicians can't control your economy if they cannot control the currency. That is a step too far. Other European nations have lost their ability to raise interest rates themselves or peg their currency to other markets. It's fine when economies are doing well, but in recession there will be a rise in anger at a system that the people feel they have no control over. I fear that forcing nations together in this way is not a means to peace but a route to civil unrest.

In the US it means hate all those others while you defraud your own government of the tax dollars those "others" put into your government's coffers. Then blame those "others" for all that is wrong with your economy and the world as you continue to lie, cheat, steal and commit all kinds of debauchery.
