Darrell Brooks killed multiple people, represents himself, and is turning the trial into a circus.

As far as I pieced it together, he had an argument with his ex-girlfriend, drove away angry in his car, and drove through a Christmas-parade, killing multiple people with his car.

The trial so far:

* He is representing himself, because he's a sovereign citizen and they all think that reading sovereign-citizen stuff on Facebook makes you a law-expert.

* He is constantly mumbling and talking over people, constantly interrupting, constantly arguing with the judge about EVERYTHING. And the judge is letting him get away with his destructive behaviour, because she doesn't want to interrupt the trial by holding him in contempt of court, instead just moving the trial along.

* He is okay with being called Mr. Brooks, but objects every single time he is adressed with his full name.

* Right off the bat, he argued that the court hasn't proven that it has jurisdiction over him.
(This is not how this works. The court doesn't have to prove anything to you. You have to file a "Motion for Change of Venue" to the court, in writing, laying out your evidence and legal reasoning why the court DOESN'T have jurisdiction over you.)
He also said that he hasn't been fully informed about the charges against him, which is standard sovereign citizen speak for claiming a mistrial.

* He argued with an eyewitness who identified him as the murderer, insisting that the witness cannot possibly recognize him as the murderer because the witness didn't know Mr. Brooks' name back then.

* He argued with the prosecutor, insisting that they are not allowed to introduce new evidence they did not have at the begin of the trial.
(Which is wrong.)

* He gave a list of defence-witnesses he wants to call, but didn't give a prefered order in which he would like to call them. When the judge demanded that he give a prefered order, he refused. So she set up an order in which they will be called. He then accused her of rushing to judgement or something like that. When she asked him again which order he wants, he accused her of violating her oath of office and demanded that she answer his questions about her oath of office. When she asked him again, he said that he has a surprise-witness but doesn't want to tell who it is, so all witnesses must be available at all times, every day of the week, all day long. So she set up an order in which the witnesses will be scheduled on the order as on his list.

* He wanted to enter an unflattering photo of his ex-girlfriend into evidence, to preemptively discredit her as a witness because she is a bad mother for her children.
He then got REALLY pissed when the DA countered that, if he were to do that, they would then have no choice but to bring up that he has multiple children with multiple women and that he is a registered sex-offender for impregnating a teenage girl.

And in the video above, he is calling the plaintiff, the state of Wisconsin, to the witness-stand. When the judge objects, he demands that the case be dismissed, because he has a 6th Amendment right to face his accuser.

I honestly don't know whether he is actively trying to provoke the judge into making a mistake so he can claim a mistrial. Or whether this is his sovereign-citizen mindset that only he knows about law and that everybody else is wrong and everybody is out to get him.

I hope this judge is a right-wing asswipe so that this shit is deserved. Otherwise, I feel badly for her.

and the way they behave in any interaction with the government.

In the end, he'll go to prison, but we have to deal with the circus first.

Failure to do that is asking for trouble.

The judge is a woman and he thinks he's entitled to his rudeness and belligerence.

Her law degree is from Regent University, which is Pat Robertson's madrassa. She did her undergrad work at Marquette University, which is a Jesuit university of not-very-high repute.

To me this is about as open-and-shut as a case gets. But I fear he's going to walk on some sort of a technicality. After all, this is the same state that sprang Kyle Rittenhouse, who murdered two people in cold blood and maimed a third.

He can complain about how he's a sovereign citizen the rest of his life in prison.
