(7,530 posts)I suspect it didn't breach national news significantly because only two people and the shooter were killed so far that I know of. I haven't heard details but it almost sounds like it could have been a targeted personal thing with bystander casualty injuries as opposed to someone just galumphing in specifically to kill as many children as possible.
It also sounds like the police took the shooter out quick so they wouldn't have another Uvalde situation. It possibly could have developed into an extended school shooting but was put down fast. Not really a silver lining in this at all.

Without saying the words "we're not Uvalde", they made it clear.

https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/video/roseville-police-update-on-homicide-suspect-taken-into-custody/Sorry, when I looked this up this morning, it gave me information on another shooting. This guy took out his family with a baseball bat and a knife. My mistake
https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-news/emergency-alert-issued-in-twin-cities-for-17-year-old-murder-suspect
A 17-year-old murder suspect is in custody late Tuesday morning, approximately 45 minutes after authorities in Roseville ordered a shelter-in-place amid the search.
The emergency alert blared on cell phones in St. Paul and elsewhere in the Twin Cities around 10:50 a.m., describing the suspect as a 17-year-old white male.

(5,138 posts)Had to delay some running around because of it. My cell phone blared a few times with updates and then we got the all clear. It was while watching that coverage that I learned about what happened yesterday in St. Louis Park.
I did not know any of the people who were killed in Raleigh but two friends of mine lost people they knew. I am still kind of stunned about all of them. I suspected that some degradation of society was going to happen as this culture learned to deal with the fact that everything is instant these days. No time to reflect on your responses, no ability to pass on nuance because it is all technical and distant. So, we get insanity because people are not aware of each other's humanity. Ask any vet here, shooting someone when they are standing right in front of you is normally impossible for a human because you can see the other human's life right there. Our society has become so non-connected that we don't see each other as humans anymore. We are just objects, or useful rubes, or THE ENEMY!
And some people wonder why I am so cynical about everything these days.

(16,428 posts)I had not heard about this and didn't have enough info to google.
The fact that it happened at a visual and performing arts school makes the whole thing even more disturbing to me, because it raises the spectre of homophobia playing a possible role.
I'm glad he was stopped quickly, but 2 is 2 too many.

(6,115 posts)The recent killing of five in Raleigh by a 15 yo shooter received relatively little news coverage. Barely any nationally; fairly restrained even in the Raleigh area.
Part of that was certainly because of the limited news conferences by local authorities.

(19,204 posts)so I guess I should stay glued to MSM all day? The only way I learned anything about it was here on DU.
Suffice to say, it got very little coverage. Like someone else said, single digit body counts hardly make a ripple anymore.
This is one sick country.

(11,031 posts)A google search will show that they are, in fact, covering it. The general public may overlook it, but I expect pundits to be able to find it as well. Maybe Twitter pundits don't count?

Searching for this shooting on google, of course, means you already knew about it.

Both relate to an established narrative and the reasons not fitting.

(28,799 posts)but until the abuse of the 1st Amendment is curbed, in other words as long as the right wing can continue spreading lies and misinformation and brainwashing millions of people to the point that they cannot distinguish between democracy and fascism - as long as republicans have power AND the media with their maddening both-siderism, i have little hope.
i have effectively lost family members and lifelong friends to this rot. but it's not even that bad for me. Our only hope is the young generations and they are essentially all I fear for. The dumbing down proceeds apace. I feel helpless no matter how often I vote or how vigorously I advocate.
just to add I'm not always this hopeless. not a good day today.

(28,868 posts)My whole Texas side of the family is lost.
Thank God my mother was from California.
barbtries
(28,799 posts)my father, the Democrat, was from Texas. My mother, who if alive would probably be full on Q, born and raised in LA. My oldest brother is the one I am estranged from although we've never formalized the estrangement. We're all from California. I'm as liberal as they come just about, but the city I came from (Torrance) is so racist they refused highway funds from the feds so they wouldn't have to hire Black people as police officers. The city my son lives in now (El Segundo), was a sundown town. He's as liberal as I am, but his kids go to school with children whose parents are...not.
I love that my home state is a blue state, but it's also a very heavily populated state, and there are large pockets of horrifying there too. Just as there are wonderful liberal Democrats in TX who can't seem to muster the numbers to turn it purple let alone blue.
This is why I wonder how a civil war could play out here. Most of us all live together in the same place. At the same time we are so polarized that it is overwhelming.

I just don't get how SO many otherwise decent people can get sucked into it ...
But, it is pretty clear we are well into the death spiral at this point. Not turning back. It is just a mater of how bad it gets.
