conservative party, Liz Cheney predictsA Donald Trump 2024 presidential campaign would "splinter" the Republican party in two, GOP Rep. Liz Cheney said.
In a sprawling Sunday appearance on "Meet the Press," the Wyoming lawmaker said her party is in a tenuous position and predicted that Trump securing the 2024 nomination would tip the scales toward division.
"The party has either to come back from where we are right now, which is a very dangerous and toxic place, or the party will splinter and there will be a new conservative party that rises," Cheney said.
Political parties in the US have split several times throughout history. Such splits have often resulted in the opposing party taking a lead for some time.

(601 posts)I would wager that a higher percentage of Republicans vote. Then there are the Independents to consider. It is my understanding that they make up roughly one third of the electorate.
It would be disappointing in the extreme if The Former Asshole won in 2024. That would indicate that he has enough followers to elect him, which would be terrible news for humanity.

(36,482 posts)They may dislike Trump, find him "distasteful" as one of them put it, but 40+ years of unchallenged right-wing propaganda will keep them in line & voting for repubs, no matter how vile their candidates are. Cheney & Kinzinger are anomalies, IMO. The Lincoln Project, too. Are there enough of them? IDK.
Back in 2015 Bernie Sanders said that there are only two ways to the White House & one is through the Democratic Party & the other is through the Republican Party. That is true about most congressional seats as well. They are the only two parties with the infrastructure. Can Cheney/TLP get enough big money support to take back the infrastructure trumpers currently hold? IDK. Seems most of big money is A-OK with fascism.

(18,126 posts)Let's face it--if Trump is the Republican nominee, there would be a good chance that he would win. Most of America doesn't follow politics like we do. When November 24 comes, people will vote for a Democrat (if that's how they normally vote), or a Republican (if that's the way they normally vote). The typical voter will not critically analyze the candidates to see who would be best for them.
Note: I'm not saying that Trump would win, just that our country is so divided, that we can't be assured of a Democratic win. It will be close like it has been of late.

(11,740 posts)People need to realize that Conservatism is a right wing ideology. It lends itself to the concentration of power simply because of its structure. Conservatism was born out of defense of Monarchical systems of government. At its core Conservatism is about "those best people" being in charge. It is not compatible with Democracy in the long run. It can be turned into authoritarianism and fascism given the correct circumstances.

(3,493 posts)He IS the Republican Party now. Theyre all like him. There wont be any new party of consequence. The voters are him. The members are him. Its delusional to think this nonsense is ever going away. When they win, and they will sooner or later, the country will be over.

(3,213 posts)Who would join the new conservative party? There aren't enough anti-Trump Republicans to form a new party. Like 80-90% of the GOP is pro-Qanon/pro-MAGA.
And keep in mind, Cheney and Kinzinger voted with Trump at least 90% of the time. They support every horrible Republican policy there is, but January 6th was a bridge too far.
