Thinking of Paul Wellstone today

Hard to believe that today is twenty years that he died in that plane crash, along with his wife and daughter. I’ll always remember that date because it happened on my parents 60th anniversary.

What a heartbreaking thing to happen to such a great family.

ran for the Senate, I think I heard or read that someplace. Can’t believe it’s been that long. I was in the drive through at McDonalds, and had just heard it on the radio when I got to the window to order and I just started bawling. Window worker, female asks, “what’s wrong?” I said Paul Wellstone just died, she said oh that so sad. I just drove away.

I still can't stop thinking that the Bush admin did something to make the crash happen, given how gung ho they were for the Iraq war and Wellstone was a pivotal no vote.

I had a coworker who recited a list of about 12 liberal politicians who died the same way.
As well as a computer expert who was supposed to talk to the FBI about tampering in the 2000 election.

He was not a fan of the FBI and Hoover.

He went missing in October 1972 when the plane he was on disappeared in Alaska.

Anyway, she actually starts the series with a very suspicious plane crash that killed a Nazi-friendly Senator and some Federal agents.

The weather was clear, though police reports said it was cloudy. The wreckage was spread over a large area, not just in one spot, as would be seen with a crash. Etc. Obviously this gets into conspiracy theory territory, but some of the facts just don't add up:

How bad it was was really exaggerated and it was not bad enough to ground aircraft.

If the original plan had been followed, Wellstone would have flown to Duluth after a day of campaigning in the metro area with Ted Kennedy. They were both scheduled to attend a rally up there.

Another suspicious crash was the one which killed Gov. Mel Carnahan, his son, and his campaign manager during an especially tight election against incumbent Republican Senator John Ashcroft in 2000. It was not the first time a close race in Missouri had been affected by a plane crash which killed the Democratic contender.

Missouri lost Democratic Senate candidate Jerry Litton in 1976 to a plane crash during the campaign won by Republican John Danforth, the Purina heir.

Questions were raised about both crashes but no meaningful answers were ever published.

Small and medium sized aircraft are exceptionally easy to disable in ways which disappear during the crash.

Paul Wellstone’s Legacy

10 years after the Minnesota senator’s death, he still sets the bar for a politics of conviction.

PETER DREIER
In These Times, OCTOBER 12, 2012

Shortly before he died in a plane crash on October 25, 2002, Paul Wellstone explained why he was in the Senate: “I don’t represent the big oil companies, the big pharmaceuticals, or the big insurance industry. They already have great representation in Washington. It’s the rest of the people that need representation.”

Snip…

In 1990, Wellstone ran a grassroots campaign against U.S. Senator Rudy Boschwitz, a well-financed two-term Republican who outspent Wellstone nearly 7 to 1. He made his lack of financing an issue by running a humorous low-budget television commercial, “Fast Paul,” in which he rapidly introduced himself to voters, explaining he had to talk fast because he could not afford much airtime. Another quirky campaign ad, “Looking for Rudy,” was based on Michael Moore’s 1989 documentary, Roger & Me. Both low-budget commercials became immediate hits, helping Wellstone gain visibility.

A fixture of Wellstone’s campaign was a beat-up old school bus painted green and white with a speaker’s platform rigged onto the rear exit. Despite some last-minute smears by his opponent attacking Wellstone’s patriotism and religious integrity (supporters of the Jewish Boschwitz claimed that Wellstone was not a practicing Jew), Wellstone won 50.4 percent of the vote. He was the only challenger to defeat an incumbent senator that year.

When he met President George H. W. Bush at a White House reception for newly elected members of Congress, Wellstone, ignoring protocol, spoke out, urging the president to spend more time on issues like education and cautioning him against invading Iraq. Irked, Bush asked an aide, “Who is this chickenshit?”

While serving in the Senate, Wellstone remained an organizer.. He was frequently on picket lines and at rallies sponsored by labor, community, environmental, and other progressive groups. His speeches, often appearing to be delivered completely off-the-cuff, would crescendo wildly into loud, short jeremiads expressing indignation at whatever wrongs the rally was addressing.

During most of Wellstone’s Senate career, the Democrats were the minority party. In his 2002 book The Conscience of a Liberal: Reclaiming the Compassionate Agenda, he acknowledged that he spent nearly 85 percent of his time on defense, battling Republican attacks on working families and preventing bad things — like oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — from happening. When the Democrats were in the majority in 1993 – 1994, Wellstone pushed for a Canadian-style single-payer healthcare system, in contrast to President Bill Clinton’s more modest reform proposal.

The thing that stood out to me was his focus in listening. He was not only intelligent but his compassion was right there in your face.
He offered to talk with me further on on issue that I had dealing with and gave me his office number but sadly died about 3 months after that. I think I cried all day.
He was an extraordinary human. Rare.
