But the local paper's obituary had a picture of the deceased wearing a red MAGAt hat.
It made me smile.

And the back pats just add to the weirdness.
"A stranger whose politics I don't like is dead! Yeah!"
This shouldn't be normalized.

(7,116 posts)It's not "just politics" anymore. It's not "well, he's a bit more fiscally conservative than I am, so we have different politics."
It's whether we survive as a democracy or turn into an white supremacist-run authoritarian theocracy.
We're in the fight of our lives. It's a cold civil war.
This is one less vote and one less foot soldier for the bad guys. Good.

(9,081 posts)People are free to do as they will, but my parents raised me a certain way. I think they did a pretty good job of rendering me more or less socially well-adjusted.
When this topic comes up (and it does perpetually), "Why is this country so hateful?!" Well . . . tada. And, "People made me be this way!" isn't going to cut it.
People need to take some responsibility for themselves.
More and more, all over the place, I keep finding myself saying, "Is being normalsauce for just one day not a thing anymore?"

(15,336 posts)A MAGA hat is no different than a swastika these days.
I didn't politicize his death. Whoever picked the MAGA picture did.
I would also comment the same way if Jeffrey Dahmer's obit picture had him holding a knife and fork.

Anyone who doesn't immediately side eye that has some weird lack of socialization going on, IMO.

Anyone with a glancing familiarity with history knows that dehumanizing a stranger you consider your enemy because of their politics usually doesn't end with just that. It's a very dark path.

(2,247 posts)Moscow man buys newspaper, glances at front page, throws it straight out. Next day and day after, same. Eventually, seller snaps. Why DO you do that? I'm just checking for an obituary. But obituaries aren't on the front page. The one I'm looking for will be.
