I've seen 17 different polls with 17 different forecasts about the midterm elections. Even the cable news networks seem to be chasing their own tails trying to get their predictions right.
Hard to know which to believe. Since their track record in 2016 and 2020 wasn't so great.
Do you have a primary poll you follow?

(1,654 posts)However, I keep asking myself: How can we tell is a poll is missing that factor? Why wouldn't a large group of voters angry about abortion not show up in a poll?

(766 posts)But every other headline on DU is about a new poll. It's almost like trying to avoid seeing news headlines about Trump. Nearly impossible.

Don't sweat the polls, just vote.

(5,104 posts)I'm a 100% lifetime voter (and never miss voting) since 1976 and that's in the public record.
Despite that, I've never been contacted by a reputable polling organization. Not once.
I have been subjected to "push-polls" that were transparently designed to nudge me towards supporting a candidate or issue under the false pretext of being a "poll."
Perhaps I've just been unlucky?

(14,010 posts)Not sure if theyre reputable but the two I answered didnt seem like push polls.

(14,010 posts)But I dont know all the polling organizations. So yes, it couldve been something shady but the questions seemed normal. One asked me if I approved of Biden, who I was voting for for governor and a few other questions. The other poll asked me which House candidate I was voting for and some other questions.

(14,061 posts)I think polling has become totally meaningless and can discourage people from voting, which is probably the point behind most polls in the first place.

(6,759 posts)I would be shocked if you found 17 same polls.
Join the crusade to eliminate different for the sake of reinforcing a count number!

(1,654 posts)Polling is so challenging these days when nobody answers their phone.
Having said that, I do think most media-sponsored polls carried out by reputable pollsters are honest, in that they are doing their best to measure sentiment. The result may end up suffering from bias based on who answers, and they may not do well in terms of correcting for that. But I don't think the big-name polls are cooking the results.
Polls sponsored by candidates, PACs, or other people with a vested interest in the outcome are more suspect, of course.

(9,081 posts)Instead of, "This poll good! This poll bad!"
Just sit down and dispassionately look at various factors, who's being polled, methodologies. Then look for trends, what voters are prioritizing, etc.
It'll give you a sense. No one knows exactly for sure 100% what will happen. But just looking objectively can give a generally vague idea.
People act like good vs bad polls is an actual fight they have to wage.
Because, internet priorities.
