by Chloe Folmar - 10/28/22 7:51 AM ET
Twitter owner Elon Musk plans to end lifetime bans on the platform as he steps into the role of CEO at his newly acquired company.
Musk, who closed his $44 billion deal with Twitter on Thursday, does not believe in lifelong prohibitions from social media sites, an anonymous source told Bloomberg.
Musks stance means that users who previously received lifetime bans from the platform including former President Trump may be allowed to return to Twitter at some point in the future.
Trump was banned from Twitter for posts that the companys leadership said incited violence on Jan. 6 of last year.
Critics of Musk have speculated that his takeover of Twitter might result in Trumps return to the social media platform due to the Tesla CEOs emphasis on the importance of free speech.

(5,586 posts)some pretty creative insults at Musk already, and I don't think any have been banned.
Musk can't be arbitrary about his rules enforcement and expect to retain his advertisers. Advertisers count on consistency of rules, predictability, and clear guidelines about what will garner an enforcement action or not. If he start willy nilly banning some people and letting other skate, advertisers will be forced to re-evaluate their spend.

(92,422 posts)etc. will be given free rein to spew their filth, unfettered?
If so, there are plenty of extremist places that all ready allow that, which makes twitter just another extremist site.
We already have right wing talk radio controlling 90% of the airwaves, along with Murdoch and other right wing propagandists dominating the market since the communication act of 1996.

(3,168 posts)Even Musk has a threshold. No site will allow truly unfettered free speech, because that would give trolls a platform to say any racist, sexist, homophobic thing they want. Also, true free speech would allow anyone to lie about anything, or threaten people, or plan crimes. Is that really what Musk wants?
I have a Twitter account but I rarely check it. I still dont really get Twitter.
