The commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, warned protesters that Saturday would be their last day of taking to the streets.

"Do not come to the streets! Today is the last day of the riots," he said.

Iran has been gripped by protests since the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police last month.

They have turned into a popular revolt by furious Iranians from all layers of society, posing one of the boldest challenges to the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution.

On one of the singing talent shows, one of the celebrity hosts is an immigrant from Iran who has been in Germany for a long time. She took a minute to mention the suppression of cultural freedom in her home country, and the whole audience rose in standing ovation. The religious police can fume all they want, but killing a woman in custody still has consequences there. If they want to do things like that and never suffer any consequences, they’ll have to go work in Mississippi or Arizona.
