And I just took the bait yesterday.
GD it to hell.
well, I'll just have to unscribe from that one too and it hasn't even gotten to launch yet.
Good to Know Now. But I really hate it when I allow myself to be conned.

(6,979 posts)It's getting so that NO American companies own any social platforms in the US any longer.
I wonder why that is?

(1,474 posts)It is owned and controlled by the developers, and it cannot be controlled by the Twitter board or by Twitter itself.

It's kind of like the Chromium project at Google, which was set up as an independent entity even though it puts out a open source software. The chromium project owns its own stuff.

(7,287 posts)I'm not adverse to being corrected, or wrong. When it is clear, I have made a mistake, I'm happy to admit it.
I understand it isn't "owned" by Twitter or controlled by Twitter.
It is however owned by very wealthy entities who do NOT have OUR best interest at heart.
That's the bottom line. no matter what the technical details of developer vs control etc etc etc

(7,638 posts)On April 26, 2022, Bluesky put out a statement saying that the project will remain unaffected by Elon Musk's proposed takeover of Twitter, stating that Bluesky has been independently operating as a public benefit limited liability company since February of that year. This gives Bluesky the freedom to put their resources toward their mission without an obligation to return money to shareholders

(7,287 posts)This sort of reads as PR bait and switch to me. Given that Dorsey and Musk are collaborators of this project.
Not at all sure what exactly is the mission.
Yesterday, it was presented as an alternative to Twitter. I inferred that to mean completely independent and competing with Twitter.
Reading what you posted may indicate a contradiction or a correction of my understanding from the post on DU indicating it is not what it appears to be.

Elon Musks deal to buy Twitter has been met with surprise, derision, and gnashing of teeth and an overwhelming amount of well-intentioned but poorly-informed commentary and analysis.
As someone who has followed the company closely since its inception and has had a chance to talk in depth about technical topics with Jack Dorsey and the companys other founders over the years, I have a different view.
Heres a series of common questions regarding the deal and the relationship between Dorsey and Musk about which I see the most errors and misconceptions.
Q: Jack Dorsey is launching Bluesky, a new social network to compete with Twitter. Ill just join that instead!
A: Sorry to disappoint, but Dorsey played a key role in Musks deal to take Twitter private. The two are good friends. And Bluesky is an initiative launched by Twitter. In April, Dorsey wrote, In principle, I dont believe anyone should own or run Twitter. It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving for the problem of it being a company however, Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.

(36,117 posts)Dorsey's developing more of an app than anything. He says himself that platforms like Twitter could use the tech.
And according to Dorsey, Bluesky will not be competing with Twitter in the traditional sense, as he noted recently that the app will instead be "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it."
"Algorithms dictate what we see and who we can reach," the Bluesky team wrote in a separate tweet. "We must have control over our algorithms if we're going to trust in our online spaces."
But don't expect Bluesky to try to compete with Twitter. As Dorsey said in a Dec. 11 tweet, "The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard."

(626 posts)They seem to to still be figuring out all the details. But on it's surface I don't see a problem with their goals. Not sure why we should think it will be much different than the myriad of other projects that do things similarly
