Rick Scott repeatedly fact-checked by CNN's Bash for suggesting the 2020 election was stolen

By Tom Boggioni
Published October 30, 2022

A CNN "State of the Union" interview went briefly off the rails on Sunday morning when host Dana Bash and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) loudly talked over each other after he claimed Democrats cut Medicare benefits -- and she kept telling him that wasn't true.

It concluded with an exasperated Scott pleading with the CNN host, saying, "Come on. Alright, I mean..."

"Democrats say that one of your proposals which would sunset all federal legislation after five years jeopardizes Medicare and Social Security," Bash prompted him. "You have previously said that those programs need to be preserved, reformed and protected. So just a simple yes or no: do Republicans want to cut Medicare and Social Security?"

Medicare in Florida, while you were the CEO, and did you not get 300 million, and do you think you should be jail....do you think your entitled to that money.....or do you think the seniors deserve that money....mine/yours and anyone else that is in the program will be devastated if they follow thru with the means test, if they get power, and all of those people that just got slammed in Florida have enough to worry about, but do they not see what this jerk wants to do to them now, if they are on a fixed income and nothing else is coming in.......this is just amazing and then there is that sleaze bag Rubio.........

Correct me if I'm wrong but he spent $26 million to be gov and about the same to get his senate seat... Of his own money. Florida is a very red state. He had to spend that much just to get a head of the other repuke slime in the race..
So he stole the money he used to be gov and senator.. uff... I hate that man...

And then there’s Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida — another state where a handful of retirees reside — who published this odd tweet yesterday, taking aim at President Joe Biden.

“This is the guy that just applauded Dems cutting $280 BILLION from Medicare while on vacation at the beach. [Biden] spent decades trying to CUT Medicare & Social Security. My plan is focused on preserving them.”

Right off the bat, given Scott’s professional background — he helped oversee a company that committed Medicare fraud on a massive and historic scale — this is a subject he should probably try to avoid.

What’s more, the idea that the Inflation Reduction Act "cuts" Medicare is utterly bonkers. One of the central provisions of the legislation involves empowering the Medicare program to negotiate lower prices for consumers on prescription medications. In the English language, there is no credible definition of “cut” under which this falls.

Rick Scott’s Company Committed Historic Medicare Fraud. He Will Now Lead Trump’s Health-Care Push.

In the 1990s, Scott was the CEO of Columbia/HCA, a company that, under his direction, owned more than 340 hospitals, 135 surgery centers, and 550 home-health locations by the time Scott resigned in 1997. That year, federal agents announced an investigation into whether or not the company defrauded Medicare and Medicaid on a massive scale. Turns out, they did: According to Politifact’s summary of the settlement Columbia/HCA made with the Justice Department, the company took the following actions while Scott was CEO:

Columbia billed Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs for tests that were not necessary or ordered by physicians;
The company attached false diagnosis codes to patient records to increase reimbursement to the hospitals;
The company illegally claimed non-reimbursable marketing and advertising costs as community education;
Columbia billed the government for home health-care visits for patients who did not qualify to receive them.

As part of the settlement, Columbia/HCA agreed to plead guilty to 14 corporate felonies — charges that involve financial penalties, but no jail time. (Corporations are people, but they cannot be sent to prison.) Over two settlement rounds, Columbia/HCA wound up paying the government $1.7 billion in criminal fines, civil damages, and penalties, in what the Justice Department called “the largest health-care fraud case in U.S. history.”
