(19,274 posts)It's already right at the breaking point, beyond which a death spiral of declining rainfall will convert most of it into savannah and open forests. And if you factor in another degree of warming in the next 20 years, increasing temps and evaporation, it's probably already past the tipping point.
The only thing that can save it now is a COMPLETE halt to deforestation AND a push to reforest millions of acres of land, implemented within a few short years. But even the most ambitious plans only talk about slowing deforestation.
Lula doesn't have the power to accomplish the hard goals necessary, because it would devastate the farming sector of Brazil. It's like in the US; we could solve the West's water shortage by "simply" idling millions of acres of irrigated farmland. It won't happen though.

(59,593 posts)Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is surging ahead of the presidential election in Brazil. According to data released today by Brazils national space research agency INPE, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon reached 1,454 square kilometers in September, a 48% increase over last year.
Deforestation through the first nine months of 2022 has amounted to 8,590 square kilometers, the highest such tally on record since the current deforestation alert system was established in 2007. By comparison, at this point last year, when deforestation ultimately hit the highest level in 15 years, 7,010 square kilometers had been cleared.
The news is significant because the second round of the presidential election pits the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, who has dismantled the infrastructure that underpins conservation in the Amazon while presiding over a sharp increase in deforestation, against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who oversaw a sharp drop in Amazon forest clearing and has made saving the Amazon a key part of his bid for the presidency. Lula has proposed a forest conservation alliance between Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the countries that account for the majority share of the worlds tropical rainforests.

(19,274 posts)I agree with you, btw. Even the least bad year under Lula was still seeing over 5,000 sq km lost per year. And a lot of that is heavily dependent upon global demand for grain and meat moreso than government policies (that are regularly ignored by farmers and loggers).

Lula did narrowly win the state of Amazonas.

(35,454 posts)Deforestation has increased every year since Bolsonaro took power. Lula will halt Bolsonaros development-at-all-costs policies that encouraged ranchers, prospectors and loggers to besiege the Amazon and plunder its natural resources.
He promised to aim for zero deforestation but will be satisfied if his government can lower deforestation by 83% as was seen under Lula and Dilma between 2003 and 2014.

I hope he can do it, apparently he is facing a hostile Congress.
