Alito is a partisan hack. Alito hates being called a partisan hack and I do not pass up the opportunity to call this partisan hack by his correct description. Alito is ignoring stare decis to advance a partisan right wing nutjob agenda

Alito similarly tried to minimize a memo he wrote in 1985 as a member of the Justice Department in which he voiced his opposition to Roe. Alito, according to the book, told Kennedy there was nothing to worry about the memo was simply a way to try to impress his boss and get a promotion.
Kennedy wasnt buying what Alito was selling and voted against his confirmation. That was wise. After almost two decades on the court, Alito had finally obtained enough conservative colleagues to join his crusade to overturn Roe to allow him to author this Junes Dobbs decision. In doing so, he wrote that Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. That doesnt sound like someone who believes in precedent or that Roe was settled law.
Just a day after the details of Kennedy and Alitos meeting became public knowledge as details from the book were published, Alito spoke at the conservative Heritage Foundation where he touched on a number of topics, including the public backlash during the courts most recent term. In response to a question about his draft opinion of the Dobbs decision leaking in early May, Alito said the breach of secrecy made him and his conservative colleagues targets for assassination......
But Alito and his colleagues seem to make decisions without regard to these consequences. Alito instead cherry-picked history and precedent to conclude that that women should no longer have a constitutionally protected right to abortion. In the process, Alito apparently broke his assurances to Kennedy, yet now clutches his pearls and plays the victim.
Alito misses the point if he thinks the crisis of legitimacy the Supreme Court faces is simply about people disagreeing with his rulings. The issue is his hypocrisy and willful ignorance of the harm his rulings produce

(16,513 posts)I don't know how to "confirm" that Alito is a partisan hack. I'm not a legal scholar, nor do I play one on the internet, so I am not sure what the exact criteria are. However, I definitely CAN confirm that a lot of people view him (and certain other members of SCOTUS) that way. A few examples:

(38,532 posts)do and I think he leaked the fact they were going to overturn roe v wade or someone close to Thomas. Isnt it interesting how they never have said anything more about who might have leaked it? I wonder why. Maybe because it was someone close to alito or Thomas?

(11,744 posts)We know that Alito lied. We know that Kavanaugh, and Coney-Barrett also lied.
Anyone who actually pays attention to the most objective information that is out there, knows that the crisis in confidence about the Supreme Court is not because we "disagree" with the decisions. It is because we have 6 people with little to no integrity on the court. People who almost all lied in their confirmation hearings to get their lifetime appointments. People lie about being non-partisan, but who have made completely unsupported rulings based not on the respect of stare decisis and precedent, but for CLEARLY PARTISAN ideological reasons. That is why people do not trust the Supreme Court much these days.
Alito is not a victim, he is the perpetrator. "Oh, I don't know why people think I am a serial killer (as he buries his 17th victim under his home). It isn't fair..."

(11,992 posts)I wish the justices who had used that phrase had been called on it. By definition, EVERY supreme court decision is settled law. That's their purpose, to take a legal dispute and settle it. Every decision ever reversed was settled law until it was reversed, by definition.
If the question is whether or not they agreed with a decision, yes and no are useful answers. "It's settled law" says nothing. it's merely a way to avoid answering the question. From which one might assume the answer is more likely no, kind of like refusing to answer by taking the 5th. I'm not really upset that these justices said such things, I'm more bothered that our representatives were often snookered by it, and didn't call them on it.

(11,744 posts)By not answering whether they would or not, they were lying. A lie by omission is a lie.
As stated in the memoir, Kennedy knew Alito was lying and did not vote for his confirmation. Too many others did not care enough, or we did not have enough Senators on the Democratic side to stop the confirmation.

(90,787 posts)Show of hands for everyone who didn't know that at the time of his confirmation. And he wasn't the only one.
Yes, Alito is a hypocrite. He always has been one.
He doesn't care that he's a hypocrite. That's SOP for him and those of his ilk.
He doesn't care who he harms. That's SOP for him and those of his ilk.

(47,395 posts)It is part of their plan to destroy democracy, to bring down American values and traditions as well.
So they not only appoint and "elect" people who will support their autocratic goals, but also who
are dishonest, violent, silly, ridiculous, brutal, etc.
This is done to make American democracy look foolish and weak.
A country with no decent values or leaders.
ETA This goes along with Putin's goals as well, we know the GOP aligns with Russia.
