(14,972 posts)Cable news -- even MSNBC -- is designed to make you feel anxious. Perpetual crisis is their business model. It keeps people tuning in.
EndlessWire
(6,537 posts)If you analyze advertisements, they always create a crisis for you to solve with their product. If there isn't one, they'll make it up. It's formulaic, easy to see, and is very hard to fact check on the spot. So, they count on your anxiety to cause you to buy "before the offer is gone." That's how they get you (and your money.)
News people have to sell the news to get you to watch, so their advertising gets seen. And, they create drama so you will develop the very anxiety you are experiencing.
We don't what the outcomes will be. And, neither do they. All we'll know on Tuesday are trends. Any contest that has a Dem victory will be denied and contested. So, brace yourself for that.
Even if we lose, we will still fight fascism. We are not going to drop dead on Tuesday.

(7,809 posts)Worrying just means that you suffer twice.
You've done all that you can do. The only thing left to do is wait. All the worrying in the world is not going to change the outcome. I've voted. I've talked to people. Now I'm going to distract myself with more Star Trek videos because that's what works best for me. There's enough stress in our lives (mine, at least) to ruin our health. Take yourself away from it temporarily. Don't watch pundits bloviating like they know something.
Edited to add: I enjoyed how the first 4 responses all said the same thing at the same time, each in our own way.

(766 posts)It's hard not to be cynical but after watching America swing back and forth from electing Democrats to Republicans every 2 to 4 years my nervous system is fried.
I feel like ever since January 2021 political pundits have been telling us Republicans are going to win back Congress. Because the incumbent party always loses seats they basically said this was inevitable no matter what Democrats do.
And that most Americans gave President Biden 3 months to fix every problem in the country and when he didn't they turned on him and started missing Trump.
And here we are. Americans wanting to turn the keys of power back over to Republicans because they want to punish Democrats for not magically lowering gas prices to $2 a gallon and eliminating inflation.
I'm just planning to early vote before this weekend and spend Tuesday night avoiding cable news entirely. I'll follow the results online while watching nature videos.
Until then there's some great TV series on HBO Max and Apple TV. "White Lotus" and "Bad Sisters" are great escapes from reality.
Hang in there!

(12,480 posts)I limit msnbc to the prime time.
I know right wing trash are trying every manipulating trick in the book and a few corporations own all the media so they are biased..
I worry a lot because if I lose ssi and medicaid I will lose everything I have and my cat I'm as good as dead, literally.
I want to have faith in the American people I really do..but I still feel sick. Then after the election comes right wingers who lost running to court, whining like spoiled little sore loser brats. Then we will have to wait longer to know.

(28,946 posts)If we keep the Senate I will be pretty happy.
Keeping the house during the midterms is virtually unheard of. If Republicans barely squeak out getting the house that should actually be considered a win for us.

(1,824 posts)go outside and take a walk. Ruining your days isn't going to help the situation and, guess what, it only gives GOP doom and gloom free rent in your head. They'd LOVE to see Democrats run right down. Don't let them do it.

(166 posts)After 2016 and surviving the Trump years I just take things in stride. Being that my parents and grandparents dealt Segregation and Jim Crow I know that we will be able to get through no matter what happens on Tuesday. These things go in cycles and the fact that the Dems have a real shot to keep the Senate and keep losses in the house down is really encouraging and makes me happy. We still have the presidency no matter what which is great. We will get through this.

(51,308 posts)In each thread, you said you werent worried at all. So what changed?
In each thread you always refer to the democrats so are you a Democrat? I found that way of referring to our candidates a bit strange the first time, but seeing it in every thread seems odd.

You even repeatedly said the economy was doing great, so we were home free with the midterms.
Just wondering what changed?

(6,931 posts)People were beyond shocked at that abortion rights vote margin and that it happened in Kansas. Dems need to POUND and POUND of what those fucks will take away given the chance. Abortions rights,Social Security,Medicare,Medicaid and the ACA just for starters. Unemployment, minimum wage and Unions would come shortly after. The Supreme Court vote on abortion rights took away all the himm hawing "Oh they'll never do that" nonsense.
These clowns are NOT Republicans from days gone by. They are full blown Trump loving fascist Neo Cons and will take away anything for the rich and Corporations.

(15,286 posts)And I'm a regular MSNBC watcher.
Recognize that fearful viewers are loyal viewers (the FoxNews model). Check what they say against what you see everyday in your own life when you're at work or out and about or with friends and family.
For ex, my county has been cited often in those stories about election workers quitting. The fact is the head of the county elections bureau had been in the job for many years and simply retired. But if you watched MSNBC, you'd think poll workers and elections officials are quitting left and right because they repeatedly cite the same evidence.

There are very few "news anchors" I respect on MSNBC or CNN. Fareed Zakharia is one of the few exceptions.

(10,168 posts)time ever, I had to turn it off. It was so ridiculously doom and gloom is was almost comical. I would have laughed at it, but it made me angry.
I will watch Chris Hayes right now, but no one else. He seems to resist doing the hairs on fire schtick. So does Joy Reid.
