…that will vote for “Doctor Oz” because he was a regular on Oprah. Or those who voted for Trump because he was on reality television. Or those who voted for Jesse Ventura because he was a pro wrestler. Or those who voted for Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Clint Eastwood because they were movie stars. Face it, the best way to get elected to office in America today is to gain celebrity in some field of popular entertainment.

The TV show made him look far more competent than he could be and he had a celebrity aura.

But, unfortunately, name recognition is incredibly important.

Every election it boggles my mind to see all the campaign signs stuck in the ground. Virtually all of them have no information other than the candidate's name. Many don't even say what office they are running for, what party they belong to, or any other substantive information to help someone make a decision.

They are relying on someone getting to the polling booth and saying "oh - I've heard of that guy, I'll vote for him".

With Walker, it doesn't matter that it has been 40 years, or that the majority of voters may have never watched him play. His name is known because of his football career, which has led to more press coverage, more discussion, and more repetition of his name.

Herschel is a republican token black man.

His football celebrity status is a plus but not the reason he is 'qualified' to be their token.

But in a close race, perhaps a significant amount. In a blow out, it wouldn't matter.
