Take their power (money) away - delete your accounts now and engage in the real world.
Don't open your mind to endless ads, propaganda, and lies. What you look at is what you become.
Save yourself, save all those who care about you, save our democracy, save the planet.

(94,598 posts)These are platforms for discussion, they are what you make of them.
Add to which, do you really imagine that if they "went away" something wouldn't take their place?

(3,370 posts)Social media is reality now. It is a proper way to engage with the real world. Yep, it can be used to harm. Books, newspapers, pamphlets, phone calls, tv ads, etc were all used to harm pre-internet, too.

(16,396 posts)If someone has a Twitter account, with 500 or more followers, but theres literally zero engagement with anyone on the platform - no comments on their tweets, no likes and no retweets ever - are they taking part in an actual discussion or just shouting into the void?

(94,598 posts)The 500 people who've chosen to follow me aren't friends and family, and include notable journalists and political analysts who seem to like what I have to say. And I get a reasonable number of likes and responses. But I look at Twitter primarily as a way to express my opinion, whether people care about it or not.

More to the point: did the bus take you straight from the tarmac to London?

The open question is: will these be new routes with 1 train a day, or greater frequency to actually make the service accessible?

I will remain on Twitter because I come here to read the many thoughtful voices on the issues of the day, not the rantings of @elonmusk.

(14,432 posts)I use an alias. I'm not on them to make friends.
I join groups that help folks. For example folks with medical conditions like mine.
Or, I join groups that provide information I am seeking.
There are good and useful reasons to use social media.
Choose wisely.

(3,370 posts)You delete your own accounts on those platforms? It's a digital world, dude. These social platforms, whether you like it or not, are actually part of the real world. There is a lot to be done about data mining, ads, political interference, but social media will not be disappearing.
"What you look at is what you become." Funny. Inhave Facebook, Twitter, Insta, and *gasp* Tik Tok and I'm still anplain old lefty liberal.

(16,786 posts)In the type of business I have of designing and making Period Clothing (be that Renaissance related, Historical Re-Enactment, Fantasy, Cosplay, etc.) I belong to some great groups where enthusiasts are interested in what I do. It is the cheapest and most effective form of advertising for me. I have clients all over the United States as a result of my exposure on Facebook as well as they being on FB as well.
One can avoid the negativity and garbage by choosing their groups wisely. I do have a Political Group page that is BY INVITATION only. I do not advertise in the Phone Book or online Yellow Pages. I have my online Portfolio page that runs me $60 per year that showcases my work.
Facebook, for ill or good, allows me to connect to my clients, family, and friends I have all over the country. I am not about to drop it.

(47,487 posts)I don't know about the others whether they have links to ads.
An old friend from high school recently found me and on the other side, I found out about the departure of another old friend, older, a former co worker.
Also, a way to reach businesses and politicians, to post a comment and get help easiest way to contact them. And just last week I posted on sites of two Democratic candidates from different districts suggesting to talk about Social Security.
If you are seeing "endless ads, propaganda, and lies" then you're doing it wrong. The key is to NOT engage with the trolls and liars.
I have had a Twitter account for years and on the rare occasions that I see a troll, I block them. It's that easy.
I follow journalists, Democratic politicians, folks who post about science, and people who post funny animal video, so my experience there is pretty nice.
The only reason I will leave is if TFG is reinstated or if Elon demands money to keep my account. No way I'm paying the "richest" man in the world (on paper.)
