In my district - from 2021 to early October -

GOP Drop - Unaffiliated Rose.

Unaffiliated dropped as well (not as much as GOP) and Democratic Party Increase.

2021 was a state wide election (Gubernatorial, Senate, Assembly, County, Judges, etc. etc.) so it's more of a base number than the 2020 election.

Independents usually are not members of a party because none align well enough with them overall.

For example someone who is pro-gun, pro-choice, anti-immigrant, and anti-union.

This also would explain why as a whole that group is so fickle, they are usually making a spot decision on which is the less objectionable candidate of the two.

most independents aren’t conservative or liberal. They just vote their wallet or against whoever’s in power at the time. They don’t have a strong ideology, imo.
