Preparing For Election Day - A Mobilizing Guide For DU Activists

Thank you, Wednesdays!
CALL, TEXT, EMAIL YOUR GOOD FRIENDS
Thanks to jxla for the tip.
Friends Ask Friends to Vote
https://www.aclu.org/news/voting-rights/midterms-friends-ask-friends-to-vote
First, make a list of your people: friends, family, and community groups you are a part of; people you see regularly; and people you work with. Next, identify who on that list aligns with our ACLU values, but may not always vote. Then, let them know theres an important election coming up and help them make a plan to vote (when, where, and how). Call them if you usually call them, text them if you typically text them, or talk to them when you see them next. Well also provide you with a conversation guide

And that was realized.
By HOPEFUL, WISE and DETERMINED people.
That triumvirate is actually a key to success in all aspects of life.

They'd love nothing better than for us to be a bunch of pollyannas "being positive" right up to the moment they slit our throats.

(100,080 posts)I was pretty mortified when I heard that my local school board was banning books and any mention of CRT from classrooms because the board was taken over by religious Fox bots. It's criminally insane. These people must be stopped!

(100,080 posts)There is one legitimate candidate, and the others have nothing to do with education and are white men who probably watch way too much Fox News for their own good. And the last Fox bot / MAGA fan that inexplicably got elected turned out to be an absolute nightmare. No way in hell would I vote for any of them. If they're running for school board and are not connected to education in anyway, that should be a giant red flag.

(32,645 posts)DU is all about getting Democrats elected. That's our purpose.
Anyone who comes on here and says "Democrats can't or won't be elected" is doing a disservice. Those messages should be alerted and removed because they are against our Terms of Service (TOS) that we all agreed to when we joined Democratic Underground.
If you've forgotten your TOS agreement, you can read it here:
(link) https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=termsofservice
I don't ever want to see another "doom and gloom" message on DU again because they don't belong here.
We are positive and affirmative. We get Democrats elected. We get things done!

(50,955 posts)The first wants to believe their desired outcome is likely until or unless they are proven wrong.
The second wants to prepare themselves mentally for bad outcomes and is pleasantly surprised when things go well.
Neither is right, neither is wrong. On DU we have both types. And ALL OF THEM ARE DEMOCRATS.
Those on DU who believe we will win have been steadily denigrating those who post polls or link to things that are not hopeful for Democrats. I have seen pessimistic DEMOCRATS and those who post unfavorable polls being accused of not getting out the vote and of not donating. I have seen umpteen threads of people congratulating themselves for being optimistic and denigrating those who are pessimistic.
Fine. Be optimistic. I am optimistic in this election. But do we really need to be denigrating those who approach the information about this election differently?
Do we really need multiple threads using infantile names to make fun of OUR FELLOW DEMOCRATS??

(9,813 posts)I am 74, and I have no time for negativity.
Worry is its own reward.
I am an engineer by nature (physics degree) and my first real job was to work error budgets on space telescopes.
One has to be realistic, identify the major sources and deal with them. Focus efforts on the biggest reward for your effort. Don't waste time, energy and money on things that waste them and make no improvement (think: the 80/20 rule)
Worrying is like pushing on a rope.
Taking action is like pulling on a rope. Pull people towards you.
So when I say Be HOPEFUL, WISE and DETERMINED, that is borne out by pop psychology.
It means being realistic, using objective measures (because relying on faulty sources is danger, Will Robinson)
It means focusing on positive energy, because only that gets things done, and
It means not giving in to other people's opinions, which can steer you off course, sap your energy, and sometimes is done deliberately.
The repubs work by a bunch of D's
deny, delay, distort, deceive and distract
Being hopeful, wise and determined corresponds to three Buddhist principles:
Faith, Study and Practice.
In many ways (as cosmic physics is discovering) "With our thoughts, we make the world"
And since the repubs also are over the top in PROJECTION, think about projection.
Projection, in short, is taking your own faults and failures and projecting them on to someone else.
EVERYTHING THEY SAY IS PROJECTION
https://democraticunderground.com/100216777247
Every Accusation is a Confession
I choose to project my inner strength, compassion and goodness.
I am no Pollyanna. I expect things to fail because they do fail. If I have a tool belt ready, and spare fuses, thermocouples, light bulbs and such ready, it's not that I am paranoid (only a little), but it's because I want to feel confident that I can meet challenges as they arise, and not feel helpless. And I help others when I can.
I am not a psychologist, but many people say that taking action is often the best way to beat depression, because it's controlling what you can control and influencing those you can influence, and as I listen to sports talk (sometimes) I find it just amazing that people spend time, energy, and sometimes rage, over things over which they have ZERO influence.
Getting out the vote is something in which each of us agency,
If everyone called or emailed just one friend in their district, outside their district, or out of state, that could have an amazing effect.
OR BE KICKED!
