I "deactivated" my Twitter account. The instructions say it will automatically delete in 30 days if I don't sign back in, but I wasn't able to delete it today. I hope Musk doesn't change that automatic deletion.
What put me over the edge was the reports about how he's treated his workers. I don't like to frequent those kinds of businesses.
This is no great loss for Musk. I rarely posted and only had about 300 followers.

(118,659 posts)lie about how Pelosi's husband got attacked was the end for me. People have a right to know what the dangers in the country are. Seems like terrorism to me. I can't support someone's platform if they do not have keeping people fully informed as a practice where terrorism is concerned.

(50,992 posts)F Musk. If all progressives flee, he'll have a consequence.

(51,593 posts)talks about Twitter since I have never used it and no one I know communicates that way with me. I have no idea what a blue check is, how much $4 a week is for removing or adding something, or the steps you go through to activate or delete an account. It is like Greek to me. I read some Twitter posts from others for a few minutes before I am cut off (like with Keith Olbermann). After reading about all the BS with Musk and already knowing about the BS with Fakebook and Fuckerberg I remain stress free as far as social media accounts go. I only have seen Twitter on DU and that is plenty for me.

(24,292 posts)I lived in Silicon Valley from '61 to '91. Most of the pioneers of this tech are older than us now. I'm 69. I was there when it all started, it just didn't interest me much. The only and last video game I ever played was Pong, and that only a few times. I made a living without tech, mostly.

(5,723 posts)Unlike most sites that we frequent on the web, leaving Twitter isn't as simple as signing off for the final time and never going back. That's because of the massive amounts of data sites like this collect about us while we're using them. To ensure that Twitter won't continue exploiting your data after you've gone, you need to take the proper steps to fully delete your account and all of the data tied to it on your way out.

(5,723 posts)...so they can't continue to exploit your data even after you leave.
Your tweets will all be erased at the end of the cool-down period. However, if you want to keep a personal archive of them, the ZDNet article explains how (and why you might want to do so).

(7,867 posts)Maybe not your lone deactivation, but you aren't the only one deactivating their account now. I deactivated my (also rarely used) account last week, after I read a post about someone deactivating theirs. You can rest assured that there are many doing just what we have done and you can also rest assured that Musk is getting reports on the *exact* number.
To further stop supporting Twitter, I would suggest that any links or news articles etc. you post, to go straight to the source and link them from their news sites or whatever it may be rather than simply just linking the tweet you may have seen it from. Just start cutting out Twitter from your life whenever and wherever you can.

Seems media ad buyer buy a chunk at beginning of year & that provides the sites guaranteed income up front. With all the crap Elon is allowing on twitter now, a lot of high roller ad accounts are (reasonably) concerned about their ads being sandwiched between a lot of really rank, racist, antisemitic hate speech. Big companies don't want that sort of company and the buys for ads for coming year have tanked.
Maybe Musk figures if he loses money the way Trump has, maybe he'll be a popular guy among the low IQ magas too?

(9,804 posts)Has the red wedding started? one employee wrote on Slack, according to the New York Times, just minutes before the company sent an email announcing the layoffs.
The seemingly-important Ethics, Transparency and Accountability team lost about 20 people, which is the entire headcount, according to former member Joan Deitchman.
Yep, the team is gone, she wrote last night. The team that was researching and pushing for algorithmic transparency and algorithmic choice. The team that was studying algorithmic amplification. The team that was inventing and building ethical AI tooling and methodologies. All that is gone.
Others laid off include the companys Global Head of Social & Editorial & his team of 17, Twitters Global Head of Culture & Community and its Head of U.S. Creator Content. Additional departments impacted include Community, Learning Design, Entertainment Partnerships, Engineering, iOS dev, Global Wellness and Global Comms.
There is a selection of employee announcements and comments at the deadline site.
