Liberty University used to be a small institution, Liberty Baptist College. They were Christian and quirky. Stuff like when one of their music majors came to our campus to perform a piano concert, everyone in the audience was compelled to stand and recite The Pledge of Allegiance. OK, what does that have to do with Beethoven? Oh well . . . . .
Next, the college since JF Sr. was running it has had a hard set of social rules. Stuff like you couldn't even listen to cool jazz in the privacy of your dorm room. Forget about rock. (Yeah, I know . . . . rock in Lynchburg, VA? More like light rock. They were going after cassette tapes and CD's.) Next, "socializing". There were areas on campus you weren't allowed to even take a walk with a member of the opposite sex. Places that were shady in more ways than one. Next, no premarital sex whatsoever. I don't remember if you were allowed to even hold hands.
Returning to the pool boy. All these kids, Christian or not, are charged with hormones, on campus for four years, living artificially chaste lives -- while Jerry Jr. and Becky were living the life of the Penthouse Forum Magazine. And on the kids' money. Getting their rocks off and believing (not in Jesus) that this situation would be indefinite and without being held accountable.
(Meanwhile, the Falwells were consistently referring to the nearby all women's independent liberal arts college as "The Harlots on the Hill". It wouldn't surprise me if Falwell had orchestrated the attempted closure of that college to attain its 3,200 acres for Liberty.)
Finally, Falwell believing that he could ride to power across the country by hitching his wagon to TFG. He could make policy for all 50 states. Stuff like federal taxes subsidizing megachurches like his and his hand would be busy removing those dollar bills.
